Thanks ladies. In the end we compromised with a Farmers voucher. I think they'll spend it on baby stuff, but the other girls could cope with it. I think the girls figured out we'd done the right thing tho, once we were shown the nursery, and the scan photo and various other baby paraphenalia (sp?). I think it was pretty clear that the couple's excitement was about 90% baby-related and 10% house related and it was really neat to see the couple so happy. I looooooved getting baby pressies before Gina was born - it gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling to just potter around her room, looking at things and touching my belly. I also had more time to admire the pressies before she was born - I was too tired later to really admire them

That's so oldfashioned! My aunty told me off for buying stuff when I was preg with Maya coz something might go wrong, but I figured there was way more chance of nothing going wrong and I didn't want baby to come home to no cot, clothes etc.

Hmmmm, they said that to me in BabyCity too - I wonder if it's policy or something?!?  I'd say it's a wonderful idea to get a voucher or something for the baby's room... sounds perfect.

We got most of our stuff before our baby was born!! It was great being organised. And if there's 6 weeks to go, the likelihood of something 'going wrong' is very very slim indeed.

Hmm, though this does remind me of when we just found out we were preggie and we were doing market research of prams (not to buy yet, just to suss them out). The girl in baby city asked if we needed any help, so we asked her to show us how a particular pram folded down. She asked if it was for us and how preggie we were, and said 'you know we recommend waiting to buy big ticket items until after the first trimester'. I felt like saying 'awesome, thanks for saying my baby is gonna die!'. But yeah preggie hormones did make me a bit sensitive

My friends and I are getting a housewarming present for a mutual friend who has just bought his first house. Now he's been married for many years and renting as a couple for ages too, so I can't imagine that they actually need much housy stuff. Plus they've actually been in the new house for 6 months, so any missing stuff they probably already have too. They are expecing their first baby in about 6 weeks time.
I thought we could get them a baby factory voucher or similar, so that they could buy something for the baby's room, kind of a cross between housewarming, and yay, your having a baby! Because surely thats the area that they might not have covered yet? Anyway, most of my (single, childless) friends think that its a terrible idea to get something until the baby is born, in case something goes wrong. I think surely they'd like to see their baby being celebrated and looked forward to, not hidden from until its born.
But being currently childless (although rather clucky) myself, I though maybe you lovely ladies would have a better idea than me. So, what do you think?
