Hmmm well close to my Mum I actually see her everyday, but that could be because she lives in the granny flat down stairs ,
I'd love to see more of my big siter but she lives in OZ they were over for Christmas and I miss her soooo much.
Other than that most of my side live in England so I really don't know them. I have two cousins here on Dad's side but never see them.
DH on the other hand is pretty close to all his Bro's and his Mum, his Mum and three of his Bro's are all dotted around west Auckland and one lives on the shore. They all have kids so we all get together heaps at his mum's house or the beach/pools etc if one is going somewhere we usually let the others know and most of them turn up. It's really cool for all the kids.
He also has a really close female cousin who moved to Ak and lived with his Mum for a while and we are really good friends with her. We probably see both our folks about once a month, my sister about the same, DH's brothers we get to see less and less because they are sick of family get-togethers We don't see a lot of our cousins, we've moved on etc and between us we have one sibling with kids and 2 cousins with kids, so not much in common really.

However we each have an uncle and aunt which we catch up with about twice a year. DH is a twin, so they are very close, and we see them at least once a week. We see MIL and other BIL at least once a week as well, he is pretty close to his Aunty (and I am too, she's great) and one or 2 cousins.

My family are doted throughout the (mostly) South Island, and I try catch up with them as often as I can. Am really close to a few of my Aunty and Uncles, probably more close to them than any cousins. We are very close to DH's family and have alot of get togethers which I am really grateful for because I have no family in Auckland. We are close to my family too but harder when you don't see them as much. Im close with my family but i wouldnt say very close.. we know eachother but we are different people. its only in the last 4 years that i got to know my biological father properly.
On mums side i dont talk to anyon, the ones i am clsoe to are my dad and his family.

I am really close to my family, but they live in Sydney! Which is my fault really, as I moved here with my then DP...but we talk every week and see each other at least once a year!

I am really close with DH's family. My 2 SIL's have babies and we all get on really well, same with his parents...we probably meet up at least once a fortnight.

Our extended family was close when we were young but now we've all grown, had families & moved away - it makes it hard. When I grew up we were constantly at my Aunts house (Mums sister) so I am really close with my older cousin. Hes like my big brother- was usher at our wedding and is Kates godfather. In saying that, when we lived in Wellington we hardly ever saw him! I think it was more because he was living the 'lad' lifestyle and we were doing the family thing. I would love to have close family with kids the same age to do stuff with. Unfortunately geography doesn't allow that at the moment and the extended family I do get on well with, is at different life stages.

We are the same Gen. My DH's family are awesome. It is a really big family and we see lots of them. My BIL has 5 kids so lots of cousins for Sam. We have regular get togethers and loads of laughs. My MIL used to be just awful to me, but we are now really close and she is like a Mum to me.

My family are completely useless. They live close but I am expected to be the one that always goes to see them and they only ring me when they want a favour or money! That side used to be really close until my Mum died. I get on ok with my brother and sister, I am closer to my sister as I lived with her till I moved out of home at 15/16, but I get on longer with my brother without picking at each other - probably mostly because we never lived together. My Dad I am slowly growing closer to - Met him when I was 7, and have seen him a few times since then (is also my brother's dad) And me and my mum get on pretty well still (my sister's mum)

My MIL is pretty neat, and FIL is a bit weird, but not all that horrible (in small doses) he has type 1 diabetes, so can get a little cranky sometimes...

My cousins (the whole 2 of them from my mum's side - don't know my dad's well) well let's just say the 15 year old boy is a drinking, pot smoking, self-proclaimed "emo" and the 17 year old girl is a heavy drinking, pot smoking, too-cool-for-school type

I think we might be an exception. We often see B's extended family, we have get togethers and all that (except when we are too slack to orgnaise them properly! Sorry Red! Sorry gemsmum!!!!).

I don't think it's strange at all. B's family rock so I really enjoy getting together them. (and I'm not just saying that because they're on here too!! ). But seriously, I didn't grow up with family other than my mum and dad so I love how close B's family is and it has meant a lot to me in the past when I've been able to text them and talk to them about problems and whatnot.

All my side are so so rich and everything is posh with them so its quite hard to find stuff in common (I'm the black sheep who had babies out of wedlock)

Ben is a bit closer with his cousins and I get on quite well with his cousins gf and we refer to our kids as cousins.

I wish I could see my side of the family more they have get togethers all the time and I'm closer to them than Jesse's family.

Jesse has nothing really do with anyone in his family apart from his parents and sister and her three kids. I don't have any family in Auckland. Actually, that's a lie, Dad has two sisters and a brother here and I have an assortment of cousins but they are so bloody hopeless I don't even bother with them. The only time I ever see them is when Dad is here.

it depends. as children, we used to get together a lot, but not so much now - last time was for my grandfathers funeral - both sides. On my dads side, i highly doubt that we will ever all meet up again, and I will not talk to my cousins due to them being greedy horrible people. and for my mums side, my cousins are a lot younger than me, so i don't see them that much.

Lewis' famiuly are a lot closer and I adore some of his cousins. They are grew up very close to each other though - to the point where Lewis said he was forever scared he would bring a girl home and they ended up being a cousin or something.

And especially cos you are both in the same situation at the moment - DHs in Waiouru and with little kids. My family doesnt do a heck of a lot together which I find quite sad and wish was different cos its not like we dont get on. It depends on your family members - If (as this seems to be the case) they are people you'd happily make friends with anyway, then why on earth not? Do you have much to do with your extended families??

When I was younger my mums family would always have get togethers, but tehy stopped when I was about 9 due to a family issue and it has never been the same since.

DH's family have never been that close and now MIL thinks it strange that me and DH's cousin are seeing each other often (once a week). Now her hubby is also away in Waiouru so is bored too, and their children are the closest things Andrew and Josh are going to have cousins (infact they are now referred to as their cousins).

Its not strange is it??
