We had a hospital referral for Ellas hernia. We went private to a well recommended one and it was $200 payable at the time. Can claim back on medical though.

We were very lucky as the Dr (Michael Watt at Ascott hospital)had a cancellation so we got in within a few days!!
Although after seeing him on the Friday and him sending a referral letter on to Starship. We ended up taking her to Starship A&E on the Monday morning as she could no longer walk. Wow you are lucky for the first time I have to get a referral and then after that I can ring myself as we have seen them already. Even my GP told me that first times need referrals but anytime after that you can self refer.

We just rang one ourselves when the Dr couldn't give us any answers about Natasha. It cost us about $110 way back in 2000. It was the best thing we could have done he was fantastic and gave us a diagnoses straight away after about six months worth of mucking around from the GP.

You could also get a referral to a hospital from your GP ie they can refer you to the appropriate Dr at Starship or your local hospital, but it may take a bit longer.

No you don't need a referal I took Spencer to a paed without one cos I had had enough of being jerked around by plunket and GPs. The one I went to cost $150. You may need a gp referal to use your insurance though. I would phone your insurance and ask them.

Yep for the first time you do need a referral from your GP. You will have to pay first and then you can claim it back. It also depends on your excess and what you have choosen as to if you will get it all back.

I would ask your GP who they recommend. We have used a great guy up here in Auckland that my GP reckons is one of the best around, so it pays to ask them!

In my vast experience initial consult with a paed is between $110-$250. General Paed was the cheapest, allergy specialist was the most expensive with kidney specialist, eye specialist, ortho specialist all somewhere in between. With insurance you pay up front then claim it back. Yup, usually you will require a referral (where your GP will give specialist all the info they need), then with health insurance, you make an appointment with the paed and go from there. ALL the paeds guys in CHCH are fantastic, so either one of them will be OK to see.

From memory, with insurance, its easier to pay for the first appointment and then contact your health insurer and as for price specialists range from anywhere between $100 to $1000 depending on specialty (my Mum's cardiac specialist charged her $800 per appointment ) I think paeds would be on the lower scale of that range...

Hey Rach, has Jack been seen by a Dr before about this? I think you'd need to be referred to a paed, so you might have to take him to the Dr's first. I really want to get Jacks walking checked out by a paed because it doesn't seem to be getting any better and I figure if anything needs to be done the sooner the better really. So how do I go about it? Do I need to be referred to one by plunket or the dr? Or can I just ring one up from the phone book?

We have health insurance so I assume it will be free is that right? If not about how much will it cost?
