Author: newlife
Subject: 1417
Posted: 29 January 2006 at 9:23pm

Please don't despair & give up breastfeeding. I have had the same situation with my baby girl Jazmyn who is now just over 4 months old. I'm not saying this will be an overnight cure for you as I'm still betting to grips with it myself. Firstly you need to make sure that you husband will support you 100% as it's tough going and you have to clear your schedule as best you can as this does take some time. Secondly you have to have a definate structure for baby for this to work. During the day the structure is feed play sleep and at night it's feed bath sleep. It's a technique called the shushing technique. Make sure you take all toys out of cot and take down any mobiles. Once baby is showing tired sings you wrap them in a muslin, put them on their side hold them there and to settle them you shush & pat them for 15 mins. If baby is still not settled you pick them up for a cuddle with no eye contact & once calm put them back in cot on other side & repeat process. Once settled roll baby onto their back to sleep. If they wake you go back in & repeat the process again. I was told to allow at least 3 weeks before you see any results. We had results within the first week and Jazmyn has slept through a couple of times but we still have a long way to go. I know it's better than what I was doing and I'm slowly getting my sanity back. Good luck Roxy & let me know how you go.

    Author: toniellis
Subject: 1417
Posted: 22 January 2006 at 1:43pm

Oh dear Roxy, sounds like you are having a really bad time of it! All I could suggest is trying to find someone to come & give you a hand with Brooke so you can get some sleep. Everything is a lot better with some sleep, and babies pick up on stress so easily that this could be the problem (or one of them). If you think putting Brooke on formula may help that is up to you, but it's just very hard to get back into bfing (if you wanted to) if that turns out to be not the problem.
Usually when you are stressed or tired its not the quality of milk but the actual supply can decrease, which can make bubs upset. Maybe sit down with your hubby & make a list of what you could think the problem is, as her Mum you are probably the best one to figure out what might be wrong and if it is something a doctor might be able to fix (such a silent reflux, colic etc) then you will just have to be very pushy to get a helping hand. Hope things can settle down for you soon. It is soooooo hard when you are tired, and your hubby needs to help out abit more too by the sound of it.
Asked to see the plunket nurse again? Tried La Leche League (they are in the phone book).. all will have lots of suggestions to try as they've seen so many babies before.. also you could try the Familiy centre, they are great for advice too.

It must be really difficult trying to juggle both kids at once, so I hope some of the mothers here have advice on what to do with the older child when you are breastfeeding.

I am going to put a post up on the main forum I go to and post what you've written here, as there are many breastfeeding/veteran breastfeeding mothers who have excellent advice, I've known them for ages and they are all great people.

I'll send you the replies :)

I really think before you do anything as drastic as giving up breastfeeding you should speak to a peadiatrician. i dont know if you are currently under a pead or if you are just going to a GP. Ask around. If you go to the www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz website im pretty sure there are some paeds listed there.

In my experience cutting down breastfeeding and starting formula didnt help at all and possibly made things worse. Because Jayde ended up having to go on a special formula that you can only get on perscription.

I know going to a paed is expensive but i think your sanity and the health of your child is worth the cost. You could also ask your gp for a refferal to go to a public paed but you may have to wait some time for an appt. I went to one publicly as none worked privately here and i just phoned every day and got people i know in the hospital to phone for me as well and instead of a one month wait i got in in 2 or 3 days.

The health system is there for you, but unfortunately you have to push and push. Another thing you could do is to just go to the emergency dept at the hospital and ask to see a paed.
