I must be the odd one out but I quite like Valentine's day - I always send DH a little something and hope he remembers too this year. I think it's romantic but it could be me. As for it being commercial, what isn't nowdays? Well Valentine is my last name so for me its a big deal I treat it like a second birthday and usually do something nice for DF budget permitting of course. We used to do flowers and cards when we first met as we spent the first 2 years of our relationship in different cities.

This will be my last one with my family name so might have to do something a bit special.

Mothers/Fathers day here usually means the other of us making pancakes/pikelets for breakfast. Valentines Day is no biggie for us because our anniversary is the following week. But it doesn't bother me that we have a Valentines Day. I think valentines day is great when you are young etc. We don't need to do anything for it because it isn't relevant for us!

We really don't do Valentines.
But Mother and Fathers day we make a big yummy breakfast for that person. The kids make a menu so they can choose what they want. IE Bacon and Eggs, Eggs Benedict, Cereal, Toast, Tea, Coffee etc etc. And the kids make their own cards.

We do Valentines day - budget style, Last year Dh bought me a miniature rose to plant, and the year before picked some flowers from his mothers garden for me. I do like the idea of valentines day, but not spending $100 on roses etc.

We don't tend to buy presents for Valentines/Mother's Day/Father's day and only get one little thing for each of the children for Easter... it is just extra money at a time when it doesn't necessarily mean anything special. Instead we give cards (often home-made) and make it a day of special things as a family - breakfast in bed for the person on Mothers/Fathers day, a nice dinner and at home Date Night for DH and myself on Valentines.

I hate the commersialisation of all these holidays and hubby knows not to go buy overpriced flowers as I will literally kill him.

But at the same time we actually just use the day to plan something nicely. One year he does Valentines day and our wedding anniversary and thenext year is my turn.

Only problem is each year it is his turn he seems to be on call and actually working. And guess what this year again. Ha.

All these holidays - Valentines Day, Christmas etc, don't have to be about spending money. Why not make things? A heart shaped cake, biscuits etc.
Some flowers from the garden. You don't have to buy into the commercialism.

we don't celebrate valentines day here - due to our wedding anniversary being the 19th we would rather celebrate that... one of the reasons we got married when we did. i agree over commusulized..

LOL. Michaela was born one week before Easter 2006. I'd gained 10 kgs during the pregnancy, lost 7 kgs during the birth and gained an extra 3 kgs a week later with all the chocolate we were given.

That is totally the way to go about it.   We never bought gifts for any of those days when I was growing up because my mum and dad hated the commercialism but now I'm older I realise it prob had just as much to do with the fact that they had 6 kids and one income. We do cards, emails and phone calls for our parents on mothers/fathers day and will encourage our kids to do the same.

Occasionally my DH writes me a poem and I'd prefer that to any old flowers especially on Valentines when it's so obvious to get a store bought, no thought required, gift. If I am going to get flowers sent to work I'd rather have them on a day when every second person isn't getting them too. Bah humbug!!

I love valentines day and mother, fathers day etc. However we dont just celebrate these days by buying expensive gifts but just as another day to celebrate love and family. My kids do love going off the the $2 to buy me a mohters day gift and fathers day gift, they also love to show me their appreciation of me by making me breakfast in bed , cards and pictures to hang all over the house etc..... Awww it makes get warm fuzzies!!

We don't do anything either. Although DH did ask me to marry him on Val's day many moons ago.

We don't buy the parents presents for mum and dad's day, they are lucky if they get a card.

I have had to tell the grandparents to calm down with the chocolate when it comes to Easter, they used to go overboard.

Nope we dont celebrate valentines day here. DH and i have always gotten stick for it as our friends always thought he was just trying to get out of it. But ive always aggreed withhim. If he cant show me how loves me everyday, then what does one day matter?
As for easter, we dont celebrate teh cho eating (diabetic lol) but we got to mass. I love mass for xmas and easter. I am religious and hate that feast days have been commercialised so much.

The funny thing is that if you do look into St Valentine what we're actually celebrating on 14/02 is the anniversary of his horrible violent death.

"Valentine was a holy priest in Rome who assisted the martyrs who were being persecuted under Claudius II. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who, on finding all his promises to make him renounce his faith ineffectual, commended him to be beaten with clubs, and afterwards, to be beheaded, which was executed on Feb 14 about the year 270".

Among other things St Valentine is the patron saint of epilepsy, fainting and the plague.

I hate that its so commercial but any excuse for more presents is fine by me! I love getting them and I love giving them- DH is a tight ass and I would never buy anything nice and romantic if it wasn't for days like Valentines!

Its quite annoying though because our wedding anniversary is on the 4th of Feb, the only 2 times of year he 'has' to be romantic are within 10 days of each other!

Why does it seem to take a day for people to buy each other flowers or to show each other they are in love? Because it reminds all the slack buggers in the world that they really should be treating their mrs to something nice for a change instead of expecting her to remember EVERYTHING.

I grew up like that... easter was maybe $10 of chocolate if we were lucky LOL (between 2 adults and 2 kids) But then our grandparents always bought us a little more. We are definately not christian/catholic etc, so Xmas was more about the fact that other kids got presents and we'd have felt pretty put out if we didn't get any when we were in primary school.

We went to church yesterday (once in blue moon experience ) and they said they were doing a special service for married couples on Valentines Day to celebreate commitment, love etc. I thought that was a lovely idea! of course it doesnt help that its my birthday, so it means that if Kent buys me flowers they cost the earth becasue of the day....honestly i cant see what the big deal is about one day, kent and I tell each other every day we love each other, and we both feel that there doesnt need to be a special day for it.

And before anyone asks, yes i think mothers day, fathers day, easter and christmas are all over rated too....BUT we aren't religious so easter and christmas doesnt hold any significance for us, BEFORE anyone jumps on me, im not trying to offend anyone, its more that everything is so commicalised now that all the meaning has gone out of everything, and the prices go up, and we spend way too much.
