He is pretty good at night and generally wakes no more than twice. I am really only looking for an alternative but I had thought to stop breastfeeding when he was one. That way I would get a chance to get myself sorted, back in shape etc before we start trying for number 2.

I have all sorts of ideas, I just really need to motivation to perservere with something. Oh well, will get there one day I am sure!

Had better go, Jack has been down about 1/2 hour and have done nothing. Wonder if I can get the bathroom cleaned in 15min??

She's happy otherwise and sleeps well at night, so I decided not to worry about everyone telling me she should be doing 2hrs during the day and let her do what she wanted. If your boy is happy during the day with a shorter nap (even though it sucks for mum sometimes!) then don't worry too much about the length of the nap time.
I found the Save our Sleep book and the Sleep Store were awesome. Good luck with getting some advice - sometimes it just takes time.

I'm SICK of Plunket Nurse, Family Centre & Plunketline all telling me theres no other solution and that this is the only way to teach him to self settle. Tried it a couple times at diff ages (most recent being ten months) and I find it VERY cruel and emotionally traumatizing for a wee bub to be left screaming his lungs out!

We also have the same problem here, Lucas is still breastfed to sleep and is waking several times of a night and very wrestless sleeper. Never slept through (maybe once or twice when he's had a big day) ...but generally 2-4 feeds per night still. I've had enough, but i don't know where to start also. Will take a look at that sleep store everyone recommends!

How are Jacks solids going Linzy?
I have real issues with the whole concept of 'self settling'. I am not sure I always agree with the sleep store methods either, but I think the main thing is that you find a method that works for you and your baby as all babies and mamas are different.

If you are not into CC or CIO then I would recommend Williams Sears book - The Baby Sleep Book. The quote that really struck me was if you were your baby how would you like to fall asleep. Once I read that I felt ok about rocking and feeding to sleep. I really believe that babies need us and night too! This book does not give you a method for helping your baby sleep through the night, but it gives great tips on settling babies and explains the physiological reasons why babies sleep differently to adults - that was really helpful.

All the best and Good luck.

We had real issues because this also meant that at 9 months old I'd only had 2 full nights sleep since she was born

I contacted the sleep store and their suggestions coupled with those in 'save our sleep' which I borrowed from the library were invaluable. Check out the section on sleeping on the oh baby website and it will direct you to the sleep store.

Good luck. The first few nights may be hard but if you perservere you'll find in no time your little one's fine at self settling without props. I am still amazed, every now and then, at how easy Michaela goes down.

Author: myfullhouse
Subject: 14288
Posted: 07 February 2008 at 3:17pm

We have just got back from a visit to the Plunket Family centre for a "settling" talk. Jack is fed to sleep and I was looking for ideas on how to change this. There was another Mum there with an 8wk old (Jack's 9mths). We were shown 2 videos, 1 relevant to the other Mum and 1 for me. Was told that Jack should be having 2 hr naps (he usually naps for 45min but this morning before going out had 1 1/2hrs).The video showed CC or CIO.

I was very disappointed in the "one size fits all" approach, wasn't given any ideas or support on how to make the change and there was hardly any discussion. It was a complete waste of 2hrs (1hr "talk" + driving time) and it has mucked up Jack's naps as he had 10mins in the car and woke when I got him out and couldn't put him back to sleep.

So I am no further ahead especially as I personally don't like CC or CIO. So I am not happy (although feel a bit better after this rank!) and needless to day I did not leave a donation!
