Yeah, I see advantages to it Jo. I guess them problem I have with it is the power (well... they say there are checks but REALLY) that the President has. Atleast in our system, there is a higher level of accountability (although then nothing ever gets done!) - it seems ya can't win.

My friend's Dad always maintains that democracy is a crock and the way of the future is 'benevolent dictatorship'

I have been following the US elections for a while now and although I'm happy with the way we vote for parliament I think their way is good too.

In America you only get a few choices when it comes to voting at the presidential election: The democrats vs. republicans and sometimes there's some small guy in there too who shouldn't have run in the first place because there's no way he'd ever get in. From what I understand (and I may be wrong) what they're doing now is deciding who's going to represent their parties - like if we decided out of a few who was going to represent labour and national in the next election.

The bonus of doing things this way is there's less of a choice on election day. Eg. Did anyone else vote for local council last year? Hilary Clintons autobiography is a very interesting read, and although I didnt know much about US politics before I read it, I found it quite educational and really enjoyed it!
