OMG thats so sad. But if he is willing to share that information with you maybe it's a start to a trusting relationship for once in his life.

My sister worked as a high school teacher in "certain" area of Sydney for a while and she used to call it Heart Break High like the TV programme as the kids there were all from broken homes and either didn't know who their dad's were or they were in Jail. It was heart breaking for her but some of them inspired her so much. She managed to get one kids writing published in some sort of short story book, I can't remember exactly but I think they took entries from all over oz and he was one of the ones chosen which was pretty cool for them both.

Often they don't want to tell you too much abotu children prior to the start as some teachers will prejudge the child and how they will handle the situation. I'm surprised the teachers aren't forewarned about these kids and given some strategies on how to deal with the behaviour. I'm an HR Manager and every role I've gone into I've had a briefing on all the personal 'issues'. You need to understand the background and be aware of any special circumstances if you expect people to function at work. Surely its no different at a school. oh that is so so sad, that poor boy. you have to wonder how many children that end up before the courts have stories similar to that one, if you knew the background would you still judge them as harshly? (general you, not you liz!)

It's so horrible when school is the only constant, reassuring thing in a kids life.

I had an 8-year old at one school who was strangling kids and starting trying to beat me up. Turns out he was so upset and frustrated because... his uncle had turned a shotgun on the family during the holidays and had the armed defenders not taken him out, he would have killed the whole family

Like everyone said.. how could you? Wow! I'm stunned! So terrible for him to have had that happened to him. It's sad to think that SCHOOL was his safe-haven, going home was a nightmare - even to his foster home.

That is so sad! Probably helpful that you know that background to him at the start of year. Sounds like you may have your work cut out in winning his respect. I presume that if the Principal knows this stuff that he has already had some form of counselling? I know what you mean liz. When that 18mth old was abandoned in the bush by her mother, Ollie was about that age, I just couldn't imagine doing that to him (or any child). he's actually really bright, but quite obnoxious. I just hate hate HATE the matter of factness - like "oh yeah, this happens to lots of people" kind of thing. kids shouldn't think like that. i've been sitting here hugging my kids thinking "how could you?" on tuesday i had the most obnoxious child in my class - claimed not to have a pen cause he didn't have his stationary list yet. pain in the bum.

anyway, for homework they had to write one page about themselves. most wrote about themselves, family etc. His story well, broke my heart. I actually asked the principal about it, and was all confirmed.

basically it talked about each of the scars on his body and how they were caused by his parents - as a baby he cried too loud as he was born drug dependant, so his parents stubbed cigarettes out on him. then he has a cut on his knee from a broken window when he and his sister ran away from a foster home and broke into people's houses to eat (he was 4). the scar he has from hitting the man who was "hurting" his sister (the principal told me his sister was actually sold into prostitution as an 8 year old). he went on to say that he loves the school cause he can stay there during school time and he knows he is so comfortable and happy. he didn't like the holidays cause he had to go back to the foster family.

I nearly broke down in tears reading it, cause it was written in typical 15 year old boy fashion - very matter of fact. it took all my strength not to rush in and tell him to move in to our house.

After being so harsh on him on day one though, he has been really well-behaved since then. the principal said he has very little respect for women because of his mum,, so I needed to be really tough on him.

the teaching part of this job - it's kinda easy - it's all the other stuff that makes it hard.
