Also if baby wants it but chucks up after too much (which can then make them want more) thy feeding one side, remove have a short play 910-15 mintues) then offer the other side. yeah Verena I found it quite important to make sure the babe was not comfort sucking - Anyssa was doing this and having a snooze while feeding and then wouldn't sleep later when I put her to bed. If you look closely at the babe's jaw when they first latch on you will see that they move right up to their ear. later in the feed you might notice this stops and they just make small movements with the jaw and pause a lot - this is comfort sucking (at least as I understand it).

Thanks nzpiper I'll start taking more notice.  I had heard of it but thought it was when they just started playing with the nipple and as mine are still a bit sore I thought I'd notice it.

verena, if you sit really quietly and listen and watch their jaw you can start to tell when the sucking changes. With us he starts a feed sucking furiously, then it becomes quite long and rhythmic with swallows and then after a while I realise he is just going suck suck suck....very regular, no pauses etc....just as he would a dummy

Someone told me (not that I'm b/fing anymore but at the hospital I think it was) that if they're having more than 5-10 seconds gap in their sucking, then they're getting full and probably comfort sucking. I did exactly what Jen said as advised by my midwife - definitely filled her up then.

And it would have also helped me knowing that they get most of their feed in the first 5 minutes.

I had the same problem and as I got better I could recognise when his sucking changed to comfort sucking. Even now he will only stop himself when he is feeding at night and then he pulls up with a satisfied smirk.

HOWEVER......with the formula feeds he will stop and push the bottle out and then push it away when he has had enough....interesting! Charlotte used to do the same thing- what I started doing was taking her off to burp her at what I thought would be halfway through. I took my time putting her back on. At the moment I wait until she stops the continual sucking, burp her(as air bubbles take up space in their tummy) and then feed again until the continual sucking stops and the comfort sucking starts. So, I've been breastfeeding for 3 months now, so you would think I would be able to tell when to stop feeding Anyssa at each feed, but I don't think I have quite mastered this yet.

She never seems to refuse the boob if I offer it - if I feed her for ages she often vomits up the excess, and if I don't go on long enough she can get a bit grizzly after about 15mins of playing.
