I always wanted to be an animator for Disney...ah well. I'm in my second career now and I think I may change again after I finish having kids.

I was never career driven and still not although I am in a professional job and been asked on many occasions to step up to a higher job. BUT I am happy in what I am doing and have my work life balance at the moment. My job has little stress - as I work part time. But then i think its cause I know the job so well that its got little stress.

I wanted to be an air hostess (cabin attendent as it is now referred as) and 'back then' you use to have to be 22.. so I waited - well blah I had josh and then let go of my dream to be one. Although i am sure I could do it now I know its not practical with a family and so will stick with what I have now. content

ETA: i never saw myself as a mother of 3 and that was not in my plan for my 20's(except of cause when i was 8 saying I wanted 3 kids). But life is funny and doesn't always turn out the way we 'planned'

I think I actually figured mine out from my Mum, she was an RTLB (resource teacher of learning and behaviour) and that, I think, led my into psychology. I've been working in mental health for about 7 years now, and I absolutley love it. I don't know why, but there's something about mental illness, working with people, that just clicks with me. I still don't know, however, exactly what in mental health I want to do, and I got the wrong qualifications now that I look back. I'm 27 at the moment and even though I am a qualified primary teacher (I went straight to T-col/Uni after High School), sometimes I still don't know if its what I want to do or not with my life (long hours, stressful schools, low pay for the amount of stress and stuff you have to put up with)
There are a number of things I would still like to try but the thought of having to go back to study at the moment doesn't really appeal....

I don't know exactly what I want to do, but do know the area I want to work in.

Since the start of uni when I started doing politics I knew I wanted to go into something to do with developing countries, which led me to International Development work.

I am now working at an International Development agency, but basically as admin. It's not the job I want, but it's my 'apprenticeship' of sorts.

I always wonder if I should go and do something that would be of use in developing countries, such as social work, nursing, or midwifery... and I still might, but in the mean time I am just going to see how things work out. This is so interesting....

I have 3 years legal secretary experience and 1 year as the office junior so 4 years in a law office and i really do love it and want to go back but places like that just aren't flexible enough so is not an option for me at the moment.

Where I am (mortgage brokers) as an office administrator there are 4 of us in the office and 3 have little kids (including the boss) so she is really flexiable with sick kids, doctors appts etc, etc. So I think until both kids (so bout 5/6 years away!!!) I will just stick to easy going and no brainer jobs!!!!

I've always known what I wanted to do since I was a very little kid. I never wanted to do anything except write, and romantic as it is, being a starving writer doesn't pay the bills so journalism is a good compromise. I did lose the plot for a while, dropped out of school at 15, went back at 17, dropped out of uni the first time and didn't really get serious about my degree til I realised I'd never get a job without it. Finished my degree at 22 with a one year old and kind of fell into my job here at OHbaby! when Maya was about 18 months and here I am still.

I've found that since working here, and having my kids, I've become fascinated with pregnancy and birth and would love to do some sort of post grad qualification coz I hope to stay in this particular field of journalism long term.

ETA: I mean a postgrad in something pregnancy/birth/baby related, I already have a POstgrad Dip in Journalism.

I fell into law at 17 and stuck with it for 7 years. I'm a qualified legal exec (have been for 4 years now) and done part of my law degree as well. I love law, I love working in it, and yeah. Especially property/commercial law. When I moved back to the Naki, there were no legal jobs around, so I'm working in insurance now, and am being trained to be an underwriter. I enjoy insurance, because I'm dealing with property, and it's the ins and outs of property that I enjoy. But in saying that I still love law...

I'm an "unqualified legal exec" I haven't had any formal training but I did have 6yrs experience before having kiddies and have recently gone back. Actually I never wanted a career, I just wanted to be a full-time mum and host of... dunno! LOL! But anyway it's how it has worked out for us atm.

With legal sec stuff, the thing is that it will always be around so that's a good thing. Well from the perspective of someone trained in Human Resources and Career Development...Lifetime vocations are less and less common now. Nowadays people change jobs and re-train more often.

Gone are the days when staying in one job for 15 years is the best thing, although it is great for some.

I'd say go with what your happy with / what works now, stay open to the options and various paths may open up as you go along.

Most employers no longer look for people who stay in jobs for 15 years. People who have had several roles and have been proactive in upskilling and finding what suits them are just as attractive.

SOcial work doesnt have to be about sad kiddies tho - I have worked with heaps of SWers in the hospital system (placing elderly in care facilities, counselling type stuff...)

Anyway, I decided when I was about 14 that I wanted to be a physio and did all the right subjects at school, went to physio school for 4 years - and now I really dont enjoy it! Have only worked about 18 months full time and it just doesnt do it for me. Kawww, I would really investigate that option before persuing it, it is nothing like what you expect it is going to be. I know so many who have left social work soon after getting into it. You know how you feel bad about the kids whose lives you can't change that you teach? Well it is even worse when they are the only ones you are working with. It is such a tough system to work in.

I still don't know. I always wanted to be a vet, all through primary and high school. Did all my schooling around sciences. Got into vet school and did 2 years and then discovered my drive wasn't strong for it and that it really wasn't for me. Now I'm stuck not knowing where I want to go career wise. Took me until now to figure it out!! One day I just thought that police would be a cool job and after going on a ride along with the Newmarket police on a Friday I was pumped!

I never really got it out of my system hence why I'm preparing to go for it now...I often get nervous that I will suck at the job and if that happens then I'm out of ideas!!! i used to get frustrated when people told me i had plenty of time(no offense ) :) and although they are right i see your point... i was like you and in the end i got into teaching and nursing..chose teaching and hated the primary part of it ..loved the kids but not the job and ended up ECE..as i love babies and helping and that sort of team approach...so i just sortof guessed what i might want to do..now though i think i want to be a social worker..so do i follow my heart and study more? or stay with what i have done..it's a lot of years to do a job if i'd rather be doing something else..

I'm 38 too!!, and I've been in the same job for 20 years I've had it too good there to worry about a "career" but they are closing down in th next few years so now I need to seriously think about what I would like to do as I don't really want to carry on in the same line of work.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

The only thing that appeals to me is being a rich fulltime mum who organises awesome parties and charity events. Unfortunately I was born into the wrong family, married for love instead of money and haven't won lotto yet

I'm being paid well now and good at my job, I'll stay here until after number 2 or 3 unless something better comes along then I might re-evaluate. I figure that I'm still young and have plenty of time.

At 22 you don't need to decide that this is your career for the rest of your life. You've got about 40 working years to go ( scary thought) and can make as many career changes as you want. My parents both went to university and got degrees in their 50s to enable them to make a career change.

p.s. Jacobsmama you should totally become a Rock Star, I've always wanted to learn to play drums (maybe we should team up and once I win lotto I'll buy us our own private touring plane )

I have always known I wanted to do something in medicine or animal medicine and then when I was about 15 or 16 I decided midwifery was for me and 7 years later its still what I want so thats next years plan.

I have thought about doing other things but I always come back to midwifery and think if I don't at least try I'll always wish I had.

I'm really, really struggling with this at the moment. It's driving me crazy! I know what I want to do, but I have to go back to study to get there and I've missed out on enrolling in it by one week (darn that overseas holiday!!!) so I'll probably have to wait until next March, which means putting off the baby plans. plenty of work out there for legal execs! finish your course so you will always have that as a back up

I knew what i wanted to do since i was about five...oh yeah this profession and being miss new zealand for about five years from age six! LOL!!! Hi girls,

Well as baby No2 is on the way I have started thinking about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life (I'm 22).

Sadly, I do have to return to work and my job is perfect for where I am in my life now but wonder what I want to do as a Career - I am nearly a qualified Legal Executive.

So basically I just wanted to know: How did you know/decide what you wanted to be doing for the rest of your life?
