Worming tablets, registration fees etc etc...it all adds up...basically to own a dog you should budget an extra $1500-$3000 per annum depending on what kind of dog you get. and yes a fully fenced section is needed and walks daily for them too....

I love my fur bubbas....but they can be an expensive and long lesson if you choose the wrong one - they will live about ten years on average. BTW i was a registered breeder (did one litter and OMG talk about outta pocket!) and it is the puppies left over or with something wrong with them (eg some not pure breds) that go to pet shops...altho NZKC dont want to know they end up there....go to a breeder and negotiate for ones that might not be PERFECT...

Do you have to feed them like Eukanuba (sp?) or the expensive food?

ooh just a wee aside. If you are going to buy from a breeder, they will probably require you to promise to feed your dog premium dog food. Actually, the premiums work out cheaper in the long run as you use less food, plus their poos are smaller and harder and less stinky to clean off the lawn!! (that is a big plus, trust me!)
Also, many require you to neuter them, and lots like to check your property before you can have the dog (we do) to make sure it is dog friendly and safe.
Also, many like to know if you are in a long term lease or own your own home as it is hard and heartbreaking to rehome dogs that cannot move with their owners because new home own't allow dogs. My brother had to give away his $1000 plus siberian husky cos he couldn't find a place that would let him have the dog.

Good luck! Getting a dog is the bomb and they are a great addition to any family!

    Author: Peace
Subject: 15619
Posted: 25 March 2008 at 2:30pm

I have a champagne chihuahua and my advice would be that if you are getting a small do then to think about it like you would if you were having another baby. Little dogs need lots of love and affection and are basically toddlers for life. They wreck and wreck and love and love and then instead of having dirty clothes that they drop every where they have DOG HAIR which is 10x worse! (although that isn't such a problem with wool breeds).
On the upside though, they are loyal and wonderful conversation. Also you don't need to exercise them for as long as a big dog and they eat minimal food. As for breeds, each breed has a character flaw... chihuahuas are synonomus for being barky yappy snippy things with terrible hip troubles and weight problems. A lot of little dogs have eye and joint problems and it is $$$$$ on top of what ever registration you pay AND yearly shots.

Think long and hard about it, it can be the best decision you can ever make, an investment and companion

My biggest advice to you is wait until your little munchkin is at least 1 (this is assuming you get a bichon) they can be a little bit jumpy and knock wee ones over. They're the calmest of little dogs that I've found (ive had all sorts) and if you'd like any advice about them, feel free to PM me :D Oh and for gods sake dont buy one from a pet shop - it will cost you twice the price as from a breeder and you risk not getting a purebred one which will get issues with health etc! I can hook you up with a good breeder as well (a good friend of mine who sells hers for not as expensive as everyone else ($600-$800) PLEASE stay away from Animates if that's where you're looking :) )

Edited by MissAngel

They are gorgeous. Slightly smaller than a bischon and fluffy hair. One bonus with them is that they hypoallergenic so are fine for people with allergies. They also don't shed hair...although the down side is you have to get them clipped which costs $$. One can be a bit yappy, but the other one is very chilled out. I think a lot of it comes down to individual dogs and how they are bought up, rather than each individual dog breed traits. We don't have a baby yet, but I am really confident that they will be absolutely fine with the baby...if anything a little disinterested until she starts playing with them as a toddler.
