Author: Bayley
Subject: 15707
Posted: 28 March 2008 at 6:38pm

Nope - haven't heard a word! Daycare have however, they called me about 1:30 today.

After giving it serious consideration I didn't take them up on the April slot, it was just too soon and I am not ready yet... We are pretty certain to get the place coming up at the end of June so that isn't too bad. I really felt so happy when I told him it just wasn't the right time, so I definitely feel that I have made the right decision.

I am going to go with what a few of you have said and look around for a home based carer for the time in between, depending on what my boss says. If all else fails, a friend of a friend has said she could take Kyan for a month - she has 2 boys, 6 & 4 so one is at school and the other at kindy 3 days p/w. So while that is a last resort, its good to know I have a fall back option if I can't find any HBC.

Thanks again to everyone for all your helpful suggestions

    Author: Bayley
Subject: 15707
Posted: 27 March 2008 at 10:49pm

Thanks everyone so much for your help!! Your advice has been great.

I have asked if daycare could take him part-time for the first few weeks and they have said that is a full-time place only so unfortunately thats a no go. Of course, I could always put him in at p/t hours but I'd still be paying the f/t rate. If $$ wasn't an issue I would just book him in early no problem, but its money we couldn't afford unless I was back at work.

Sorry for any confusion - the $1500 is 6 weeks worth of daycare, well a bit more than 6 actually - its $235 per week. I was rounding up!

Katherine, thats actually what I'm worried about - if I didn't take the place now then I don't know when the next one would come up - it could be months away! He said the next one would be coming up in late June/July but couldn't guarantee it. Yep, we specified a start date of the 26th of May, but obviously I was naive and didn't have a clue how it all worked, so just assumed that I would get that date - esoecially cos when I put his name down they said that should be fine and they only had waiting lists up till March...

But I do really love the daycare - we didn't find anything else that we liked as much, and this one was close to home so it suited us perfectly.

Unfortunately I have no-one who could look after him at all, so that isn't an option The ideas about getting him into home care are great though, and definitely an angle I hadn't thought of! Georgia, I'm in West Auckland.

Mel thanks for the tip about the 9hrs through Winz - I had no idea that even existed.

I've been thinking about it all day, and I figure I have 4 options:

1) Suck it up and book him in for April, and go back to work in May as planned.

2) Book him in for April and go back to work early

3) Turn down this spot and take the next one that becomes available, and find a home carer or similar betwen May-whenever...!

4) Email my boss and explain my predicament. Ask VERY NICELY if I can work from home until a place at daycare became available. Worth a shot, right??!!

Option 4 is my favourite but very unlikely to happen!! Thanks again for all your help

You could take the spot and then use up some of your leave you've earned while on maternity leave and although it wont be at the full rate it will still be something (I'm not 100% how the leave thing works when you are on maternity leave, just getting my head around it at the moment)

I booked Alyssa in early and they said there would be no problem but then they rang say either start now (February) or she won't get in until June. As others have said, places are at a premium and if you don't have a place for him by the time you are meant to return to work that could potentianlly cause more issues than having to start early at least part time.

I also like Katherine's idea of maybe combining it with going back to work part-time.

It is a hard postion to be...I personally only had just over a week to get used to the idea that I was going back to full time shift work and that Maddie was going into full time Daycare. Literally I had about 10 days if that, before then I was going to be a SAHM for years. But that changed in a matter of days and that is something that is hard to get your head around!

The only other option would be what Georgia suggested....a home carer.

That way you might be able to better afford the centre if he starts early, even if you only have him there for half-days while you are working and still pay for the full day (if the daycare insists). Or perhaps ask if they can do a part-time basis for you until you go back to work, so that you can get him settled in but ease that transition into full-time care. If they know it's only for six weeks and it's leading to full-time (translation: bigger bucks) they might be more open to options. Go in with a couple of ideas.

That's freakn expensive for a daycare.

I think you should take them up on the April date, and just have him there for a couple hours a day. They can't dictate to you surely how long he's in there for? Why don't you apply for the 9hrs free thru winz for that time before you start back at work?

Author: Katherine
Subject: 15707
Posted: 27 March 2008 at 4:41pm

Daycare places are hard to come by in many areas, so it's not unusual that you actually got your child's place at the daycare last December -- it's also not unusual that they aren't sure whether they will have an opening again until June or July.

From personal experience, my daughter has been on the waiting list for a local daycare for since she was eight months old, for a two-day-a-week spot. This daycare is very small so openings of any kind are extremely hard to come by, and part-time ones are almost impossible to get. When she was 18 months they called to say that they had a spot for her, but it didn't feel right to me at the time so I turned it down. The next spot they ended up having was starting this month (when she is 25 months), which I again turned down. I've finally confirmed her to start at their next opening, which is in August (when she will be 30 months). So I understand the waiting game.

My daughter goes to a PORSE babysitter three days a week, and I haven't been quite ready for her to be in care for five full days (three days at the PORSE babysitter and two days at the centre) but after realising over the past year or so that their openings are very rare, I'm biting the bullet because I really want her to go there rather than someplace else that might have an opening exactly when I want it.

Ask them if it's possible to delay his starting until the first week of May, or explain your situation and ask them what their options are. They may be willing to negotiate to hold a spot open for him if you accept on the condition that he starts a few weeks later than the date they want, because you don't have the financial means to pay them for the full six weeks before you go back to work. I would avoid telling them that you don't want him in care yet as they will be less likely to negotiate with you. When you first put his name down, did you specify a start date or was it left open?

Also remember that the earlier you get him in, the better. Once the 20 hours free thing kicks in at the age of three, many parents are putting their three-year-olds in care for as many hours as they can get as it's so cheap. (For example, at my daughter's imminent daycare, it's going to cost us more to send her for two days a week at age two than it will cost to send her for five full days at age three.)

    Author: Bayley
Subject: 15707
Posted: 27 March 2008 at 4:20pm

Ok so a bit of background for you all... I have a 10 month old son and financially I have to return to work at the end of my maternity leave. I was originally due back on the 12th of May, but have delayed this till May 26th as Kyan will have just turned one (the day before) and it was really important to me to spend that first year with him. After looking around at a few daycare centres, we put his name down at the only place that 'felt right' last December, to start on the 26th of May.

I have just had a call from daycare saying that they can take him either on April 14th (2 weeks away!!) or not till late June/July and they can't even confirm that at the moment.

I have no idea what to do!! I am so not ready to leave my baby in 2 weeks time (I don't want to leave him at all anyway but thats another story!) but I have to return to work in May or else I won't have a job to go back to! And also we can't afford for me to not earn anything until June/July.

I called DH and he wants to just pay for the daycare for 6 weeks till I go back to work just to keep Kyan's place, but thats gonna cost $1500 and we certainly don't have that kind of money. He doesn't deal with our finances so he wouldn't have thought of that aspect. I'm trying to be really careful with our spending at the moment as we want to plan for #2 and need to save all we can so that I can spend a year at home then too.

But I really don't want him in care 6 weeks early, as a friend said to me today - those are weeks you'll never get back with him, and I totally agree.

So...what do I do??!! Oh and the worst part is - daycare needs to know by tomorrow afternoon!! Please help - any ideas greatly appreciated... TIA
