OMFG do I Have to get in the toboggan...me thinks not...LOL!!! aactually she handled the rollercoaster at Emma rosesparty well and hung on so I think if one of us above and one below her she would be ok....just a lot of yelling HOLD ON!!!!

I wouldn't take a small child on that hill though!
I started on that slope and it is steep, and I was 17 or something the first time I tried skiing. It's not easy to stop if you haven't had much experience.

When you get to the carpark at Whakapapa you turn left to go down that little chairlift to Happy Valley or straight ahead past the chairlift for the Rock Garden and there is a huge slope just for sledding. You walk up the hill on the right hand side. The slope is very wide and quite smooth so you don't wipe out from hitting bumps, only bad steering. Down the bottom is a cafe but we put a flask of milo at the bottom of the hill.

August is the best month for snow and outside of all school holidays and long weekends. Check the website to see if there are any events on that you need to avoid. When we went to Whakapapa and Turoa last year you weren't allowed to use toboggans on the beginners slopes. We walked up to an area behind there where there were heaps of other young families using them. The kids had great fun!

Having taken a toddler there twice now (she was 1 yr, then 2 yrs) I'd definitely say that Turoa (Ohakune side) is more kid friendly - if you go to Whakapapa you will probably be in the way of skiers/snowboarders. And Ohakune is much closer to the mountain than Turangi is - there is a playground in Ohakune too if the mountain weather isn't good!

We rented a house for about about $100 a night - which worked out cheap for 4 of us (we took my mum with us).

Have a check to see when the school holidays are, check the australian school holidays as well. Sometimes its all about luck. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts closer to the time. Decide if you are going to stay on the mountain or Turangi. Before I had kids we used to just go to Turangi and make the call in the morning.

Where are you going?

My only advice is avoid sundays but if your only going on the learners slopes it won't be too bad waiting for lifts, or you could even walk Ella up and down on the toboggan on the busy times. Have an early or late lunch so you can use the lifts when everyone else has gone inside for lunch.

Ok so we are off to the snow sometime in august we have decided....

sooo any ideas of which weekend we should look at and also any to avoid? We arent really going for the skiing...its for the bubbas really...but am sure there are some weekends we should probably avoid?

any other tips appreciated...last time i was in snow it was a state of emergency blizzard in Pennsylvania USA! so havent been in any hurry to go back to snow until grannie bought ella a toboggan!
