When we played sports against the private school girls, I always wished I could have gone there as a student, St Cuthberts is a beautiful school.

We had never actually thought about schools, until my mum mentioned about this trust fund that they were going to set up for Lucy and Zoe.

We went through all the options and have decided on a catholic primary school and then for college it will be Wellington Boys. LOL Paws, when we got the literature from Maya's primary when she started and it said one of their feeder schools was Baradene I had to ring my mum and have a lil snigger coz even if she does go private, she is *never* going to Baradene, her mother's reputation would precede her

Teasing I think you get at any school but I know at mine bullying was zero tolerance...ditto for other behavioural issues, stealing smoking on school grounds or in uniform etc.

In my personal experience, absolutely! My parents sent me to private school from Form 1 and I did OK to start with by by 3rd form I hated it and I ended up being stood down and asked to leave half way thru fifth form, and I failed school C. A few months later I repeated fifth form at a public school (AGGS, which btw at the time had an appalling reputation and the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the country), and loved it. I even got Bursary English with scholarship.

Having learnt their lesson (my brother also did poorly at a private school), my parents then let my youngest brother and sister choose public or private. My sister chose to go public and thrived, my brother chose to go private and boarded at St Josephs Hunters Hill, one of the best schools in Sydney, and also did really well. Different strokes for different folks and all.

We've chosen to send our kids to a high decile Catholic/integrated primary even tho it is a 15 minute drive away which is, I guess, kind of a compromise between private and public, and when they get to high school, they can choose whether they go public or private. DH and I have talked about private schooling for our children... he has a background of a mixture of public/homeschooled/private, whereas I went public right through. We've agreed that we want our children to attend public school for at least primary/intermediate ages so that IF there is a difference in quality of education to be gained by sending them to a private school, they are old enough to appreciate it.

I went to public schools all my life, and my 7th form here (my first and only year in NZ high school) was at not so popular school....and I did ok. But In Zimbabwe I was in a school that had those tough rules like a private school. I think that groomed me as a person and I was a very active prefect and that gave me the confidence and self control etc....

I see my cousins who go to very good public school and yet the stories they tell me abt students makes me sick with worry. I think that some people benefit form private school and some don't - and the other way around. I went out with a guy whose aprents paid for him to go to private school, after he went through public primary schooloing with us - he finished up worse off than the rest of us in certain areas, with more of the public schoolers going on to uni, with more motivation and knowledge of life...

Just a thought.

We live in the country and the schools around us are not the best. I think it depends on the area and school for teacher/child ratios. In high school we had small classes (20 was rather big, and got down to 10 for others).

I find it interesting that considering my inlaws huge background in education (ex teachers/principals, ERO and lecturer at massey) that both of them said that if they had the money they still would not have considered private schooling for their kids.

The one person who I know (in real life) who went to a private school absolutely hated it. The ones that DH knows who went from public primary into private high school he says it turned them into right up them selves jerks lol. yes that is true i must say..generally they get better teacher ratios....and i agree it is often the parents experience that decides what happens for the child...

I prefer the idea of private school as the teacher-child ratio is alot better than public schools, that's the major thing for me... sadly we may or may not be able to afford it by the time Seb is of school age, so we can't book him in now, and I'd hate to see the waiting lists for most good private schools! Yeah to tell the truth I'd never consider sending our kids to a private school. Probably just because I went to my local schools and got a great well-rounded education, and I think I learnt loads of life skills like getting on with people from all different walks of life (I'm not saying that kids who go to private schools can't get that, but there's probably greater diversity in public schools).

I went to a reasonably low decile highschool and we still had loads of opportunities, like my sis travelled around Europe with French and I went to heaps of different places in NZ with music.

I would only look at private for secondary schooling, and only if my children wanted to go into that type of schooling. A woman I know went to a private boarding school for secondary schooling and she hated it, and her education was effected.

Am finding this really interesting too. I have been thinking about these issues a lot recently as I am currently teaching part time in a private girls school. Prior to that I was teaching at a very good public school in a decile 10 area with an excellent community and fantastic parent support. I have to say that I presonally prefer the really good public school. What I am teaching in the classroom is exactly the same as I would do if I was back at my old school. I am honestly not convinced that the children get more at the primary school level. I notice there are more trips out and perhaps a few (not overly noticeable) more resources. Children can go out of class for speech, drama music etc but those are at the parents extra expense and they are things you could organise for your children after school anyway.
I think I feel differently about it at the college level though and can see more benefits then.
It is a really interesting topic and I have found it a really good experience to be in a private school this year and be able to make comparisons and observations.
I honestly think that the most important thing is the school itself. There are some AMAZING public schools out there with awesome teachers and really onto it principals leading.
I know everyone has their own opinions but I don't think it is just a black and white or a given that because you pay more you get more.

It's not something DH & I have ever discussed but I can't imagine that he'd want to send Liam to a private school. We are lucky enough to live in one of the nicer parts of the North Shore & the schools around here seem to be pretty good. I wouldn't have any hesitation to send him to the local school.

I don't really know a lot about private schools so don't claim to know their advantages & what you actually get for your money compared to public schools??

We'll probably be sending Joshie to the Ficino School in Mt Eden. Mainly because we're not in a particularly good school zone, but also because DP and I both agree with the philosphy of educating the 'whole' child - academically, spiritually and socially. The children meditate on a daily basis, spend time doing community work, attend church plus follow a fantasticly enriching educational curriculum. Also, it's co-ed.

It's nothing like Dilworth...the daughters can apply for one of the limited scholarships when sitting the entrance exams for intermediate school. (it's my old school )

I would love to send my boys to a private school for high schooling. At this stage its not an option but in a few years things might be different.

Mel I really hope Connor gets into Dilworth, my son is in year 8 at Dilworth Junior Campus and it was the best decision I ever made to apply for him to go there. He loves it and the changes in him confidence wise are amazing.

I that school they are wonderful and caring and take such pride in their boys, its awesome.

Mel - my step-brother went to Dilworth and loved it so I hope Conor gets in. He went onto University and got a degree as did most of his mates (and he's still friends with just about all of his mates from Dilworth). I couldn't send a 5yr old to boarding school though.

I went to boarding school from Form 1-5. I would love to send my son to one but we don't have the funds to do it.

I want to send Miss M to a private school...I'm also a private school girl from the age of 5 so would love to send her to my old school.

Charlotte is at a private school over here- I LOVE it. The classes are tiny (she is in a class of 11 and they have 2 fully qualified teachers per class- this is for 4 year olds). Next year they go up to 14-16 children with 2 teachers per class. Because of the small classes they get so much one on one time. She has classes with different instructors who come in and teach them french, dancing, karate, swimming etc. She blows me away with some of the stuff she knows- her writing and reading are just so amazing!

I would like to send my children to private schools. I had the choice as a teenager and opted for public and I turned out o.k too , but it would be nice to be able to afford for our children to go private, but probably wouldn't be until high school for us.

We are very lucky to be able to send the girls to a private school... thanks to my parents setting up a trust fund for the both of them.

Does anyone send their children to a private school? They will be starting at age 5.
