i know people who's MIDWIVES said one drink a week would not harm a baby and even encouraged them to have the occasional drink if they felt comfortable.  Its a personal choice and i dont believe that the research around it is very good as im pretty sure i read the french drink through pg and they dont have the same problems.  I think the big issue is that in NZ we tend to over-indulge as all our wine glasses are closer to holding 2 standard glasses of wine than one (or my wine glasses that hold half a bottle hehehe)

I didnt drink during most my TWW's mostly cos i actually didnt want to drink but then one of the times i did i found out i was pg a week and a half later but ive never been concerned about it.

In the end its you that has to feel fine with it NOONE else

This stressed me out cos I had a night out about 2 weeks post-ovulation, then found out 3 days later I was PG. I anxious searched everything and came to the same conclusion as MrsMojo - takes a few weeks for everything to connect up. I think it's a personal decision. It is 5-6 weeks before the blood supplies are joined - ggogle to find out exactly when. While I personally didn't drink alcohol in that time, and I am still not really drinking caffiene since giving it up to TTC, I fell pregnant first go. i am sure I would have got over it too.

With caffiene, there is an increased MC risk in studies where the equivalent of 3 cups a day is drunk, not sure if it effects before the blood supply is joined though.

The comments against drinking in that thread were against drinking while pregnant which doesn't really answer whether it's ok while TTC.

I drank right up until I found out I was pregnant @ 5 weeks and when we TTC again I'll do the same. I don't think the baby can absorb anything until the egg is implanted which is about 7-10 days after ovulation, or in other words 4-5 weeks pregnant (remembering the the first 2 weeks of your pregnancy start the day your last AF started)

If you are concerned that having a glass of wine when you're potentially pregnant would be harmful but you would like a drink every now and then why not drink when you have your AF and in the week following prior to ovulation.

I think the key is don't drink to excess and if you suspect you're pregnant do a test before opening your bottle of wine.

I'm with you. My theory is that most people wouldnt know they were pregnant during the TWW so the odd drink isnt going to hurt. In fact they are having doubts about whether the odd drink hurts at all during pregnancy. I doubt european countries abstain throughout their pregnancies....and you dont hear of an increased incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome.

IMHO....its scaremongering and as long as you arent having benders (ie you would be ok to drive legally) I dont see the problem.

That said, I didnt drink through my pregnancy because I was paranoid....although I did find out I was preggers when we were inthe Rhine region of Germany and I LOVE Reisling so I sipped at the tastings and probably totalled 1 drink throughout the day!

Go with your gut. If you have been TTCing for 2 years you might feel you need to go by the book...on the other hand a little less stress could be nice too.

Erm, well I had a few drinks after a negative pregnancy test and it turned out I was pregnant - argh!  Ella would have been 2 weeks in the wom by then.  So I wouldn't recommend any alcohol around the time of ovulation until a AF arrives, but I don't see the harm in having drinkies when AF is around or a few days afterwards.

I don't like alcohol anyway, but I wouldn't touch it if I did. Not only are there the consequences, but things like caffeine and alcohol can affect your fertility I think.

I do have the odd caffeinated drink, usually right after I get AF as a treat.

I remeber seeing a thread about this sometime ago.  What are your thoughts on drinking during the TWW? I have been trying to conceive for roundabout two years now and have obstained from all the recommended substances during this time (caffiene, alcohol, etc).  However I am beginning to feel the strain of the TWW and acting like a 'pregnant' woman is disheartening when nothing is happening!   I would like to enjoy the occasional drink with friends during the early stages of the TWW but are terrified of the consquences.
