well i am just going to keep an open mind and go with the flow, i will just be guided not only by my body, but also the midwife as she should know when to intervien if needed.

I'm hoping & praying that this time I get away with just abit a gas! Last time I had just got my breathing controlled when my epidural was getting put in LOL.
Kazzle, I really do hope you get that natural birth.
I know that I'm hoping for a natural birth & I have been getting really annoyed at my MIL telling me I will never have it. She may be right but she doesn't need to keep going on about it!! Grrrrrrr!
I would really like to have a water birth or at least labour in water but I have heard alot of things about not being able to after a C-section???

I put down on my birth plan not to use pethadine, was worried about it (I'm a worrier tho! ). I know it does affect the baby although not sure of all the things it does. I used gas & air and didn't want an epidural either although when I was about 9 cms (didn't know that @ the time) I was about to ask for an epi but felt bad about it.. didn't get one as I was ready to push a few mins later.

yeah i agree, so many people have it all planned what its gonna be like-and we all know the best made plans dont usually workout-murphys law or something i guess? for eg i hadnt even considered no pain relief i was having epidural/pethidine/mercy gunshot to the head( sorry ) but in the end she (caitlyn) started life as she meant to go on-contradicting my every decision and i had no pain relief, at the time i thought i would rather die, now i am proud that i did it, and next time unless for medical reasons i cant, i want to do it drug free as well,but anyway what im trying to say is we dont always get the labour we want, but as long as babies healthy and happy at the end who cares how they got here?
And as for feeling guilty-well we should feel proud to have been given the honour of birthing them and being pregnant-theres a reason why women have babies and men dont-because God knew we could handle it LOL

I have to agree with Liz. Please don't take this the wrong way, but until you actually go into labour, you have no idea how much it hurts! (or dosen't, some have it worse than others.) I said I would see how I went in regards to pain. I thought I would be ok, with breathing, bath, massage etc.. When I actually went into labour, I had no idea that I would feel so "out of control". I had gas, made me vomit, and at 7cm, I had an epidural, which worked for a bit, and I was able to get some sleep (I hadn't been to bed the night before) but the top up never worked and I felt every last thing. At the end of the day, I feel fine about that. I am proud I was able to go as long as I did without anything. Some of the other girls in my group really beat themselves up about the pain relief thing, like they are in a competition, and feel like they lost because they "caved in". Like Nikki (maybe nikki, to lazy to go back and see) said, the actual birth thing is a small part in the equation. Good luck! (LONG RAMBLE!!)

I think it's important to not make up your mind completely on anything. when i was preg with the boys my specialist told me I was 90% likely to have a c-section so I got my head round that only to have the boys naturally (i had one small puff of gas and promptly threw up everywhere). im glad thou but I wish my midwife had told me to be prepared for plans to change as I was so stressed about it all happening naturally (they were early too which didnt help) that I didnt get to "enjoy" my labour if that makes sense.

thanx guys, i think the reason we have to look up the different pain options is so that we are doing our own research and are informed.

i have been questioned a lot recently about why i am wanting a natural birth and the biggest question seems to be "Why are you trying to prove something or what", i must admit it absolutely amazes me that ppl i dont even know think that they can have a say in what i am doing with my body.( btw that doesnt include anyone from this site ).

i am just having a winge, i mean i dont judge others for how they have there children, everyone is different, besides i have had an epi before and a spinal tap and both times were very unpleasant to say the least, and the epi doesnt take properly with me, it only works on one side. and as for pethadine, i throw up on that, or it knocks me out for a couple of hours so i am not touching that with a barge pool, so that only leaves me with the natural option. which i am completely happy with. alright my winge is over.

I would never ever have pethadine ever again! It made me so sick, and extremely drowsy. I can't actually remember a good two or three hours of my labour with Micheal. Not to put you off your birth (cause everyone is different) but I wanted a "natural waterbirth" - no pain relief (maybe gas) etc etc. I got toxemia, was induced has pethadine (threw up green stuff for over an hour) had 2 epidurals and then nearly a c-section (bubs heartrate was al over the show) ... then she coughed and stopped breathing when she was born... To me I take that as Pethedine side effects.

ANYWAY... what I am trying to say is write down your birth plan how you want it and if it changes make sure you still know what is going on and you are in control... gee kazzle i would of thought it would be the job of the antenatal class to tell you that stuff...not set homework...

Hey Toni, just wanted to say that many of us feel guilty or incompetent for some part of the birth. I feel like I didn't do well enough and only just realised it a few months ago... carrying around that crap wasn't so much fun but feel a lot better about it now.

I think you did amazingly to grow your little one and raise him. Birth is such a minor part when you consider the whole scheme of things!

Hope everything goes to plan for this birth though. Would be nice to be able to have some control! Lol all I can say is pethidine is the worst thing in the world.....but I'm prejudiced against it since I'm allergic I had it before discovering I was allergic & it was horrible. I had instant nausea, blood pressure fell through the floor, and the feeling of not being in control scared me alot. I ended up on oxygen & 2 IVs last time I had it because my body shut down. NOT pleasant.

Also Kazzle I just wanted to say good on you for wanting a natural birth, but if it doesn't happen then don't feel bad! Thats what I wanted, a nice natural birth, using water if I needed to help with pain relief. Boy did it end up the complete opposite I won't give you the details but I was so determined I was going to do it all naturally that I just felt really terrible that I couldn't. This time around I'm trying again to go natural but if I can't maage then I'm "determined" that I won't feel like my body let me down.

Oh & reading this it sounds to me that I'm being really horrible, but I swear I'm not trying to be mean! i found a little information in a couple of my preggy books, but they basically say the same thing, best to have it in early labour as it can effect the breathing of the baby, and it has a few side effects as well.
