Interesting in the first post that it mentions 95% of us have this chemical in our urine, but not 95% of us will get cancer.

We use nuk bottles here and they have a 7 on them, I thought about glass but have heard you can't microwave sterilise the bottles so flagged that idea and thought I would probably drop the bottle on the granite bench and break it too. I am not going to worry too much, man breathing in the chch winter air would probably give you cancer faster anyway.

The site I mentioned above also has a whole lot of information on Plastics.


2 is the Plastics Identification code for HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), which is a comonly used plastic and is recyclable.

It is the Number 7's which are raising some of the concerns as these are a mixture. However the 7 is the recognised symbol for all 'other' types of plastic and this includes biodegradable types of plastic so just because it has a 7 on it doesn't necessarily mean it is Polycarbonate.

ive always been a fan of NUK products, there not cheap either and thereve all got the "7" on them
they do make glass ones too but not in the wide neck range.

hopefully by the time our kids are older no one will die from cancer anymore.

I have some of those bottles Bombshell - Playtex ones. Mum bought a whole lot back from the States for me, but I didnt like chucking out little plastic liners all the time. I knew there was a reason I was too lazy to heat up Tom's milk Apparently heating increases the risk of the chemical leeching out!

I think it needs to be put in perspective as there are lots of other things we do that probably increase the risk of cancer.

first off it affects more than just baby bottles...

eg - my pump bottle today is one....it has the symbol with a number 7 in middle on bottom....how many of us drink out of those!!!!!

If you are really worried there is a fantastic system we used in usa which uses bags for the milk and they sit in a plasti type outer bottle...not widely avail here but baby city stock them....I was going to use them but then saw how frequently they ran out of stock and thought better of it....I know I would run out of the bags too often. If I ever had to use bottles again I'd be using glass anyway. They're easier to clean/sterilise than plastic, and they last heaps longer! You can buy bottles that don't have Bisphenol A, I only think it's overseas though.

I'm not going to panic over it. I am sure that I had heard it before too but now that Canada has banned them I think maybe it could be more serious.
If there is anything I can do to possibly reduce the chance of cancer then I am going to do it. Such a small price to pay. Did anyone see this on the news? I am taking no chances and buying new bottles. Anyone know the safe brands?

For those that didnt see it Canada has banned polyc bottles as they leach Bisphenol A into the bottles contents. A study has shown that this can cause cancer and affect hormones.

The following was taken from a website:

Exposure to Bisphenol A is Widespread

Bisphenol A is most commonly used to make clear polycarbonate plastic for consumer products, such as baby bottles. Through use, this plastic breaks down and leaches bisphenol A into liquids and food to which it comes into contact.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found bisphenol A in the urine of over 95% of people they tested.
Alarmingly, the median level of bisphenol A in humans is higher than the level that causes adverse effects in animal studies.
