Do you have it on thermostat? Is it on all day/night? Remember the most expensive part of column heaters is the oil heating up, so I'd recommend that you have it on thermostat and on all day. There's a report on www.consumer.org.nz about oil heaters and it includes a calculation to work out what size heater you should use and how much it would cost. Not sure if it fully answers your question but I hope it helps.

This has stemmed from the power bills thread,

I use a column heater to keep the chill off Ethans room at night, but which do you think would be cheaper to run.

a) a smaller 3 fin heater on a higher heat

b) the larger 8 fin heater on a lower heat....
