With the pregnancy that I micarried I went to the doctors first to confirm my pregnancy, then they gave me a list of midwves in my area, so i phoned one right away. I saw my midwife at 6 weeks to basicly meet her and see if i liked her, I decided i did and I signed up with her then and there and she took all my medical history and weighed me, took my blood pressure and we discussed my AN care etc.

When i found out I was pregnant again after my m/c I phoned her right away and she saw me at 5 weeks to see how I was and stuff, weighed me, took my blood pressure and gave me a form for my first lot of bloods etc.
I saw her every month until 28 weeks then i started seeing her every two weeks and Im now once vist of weekly appointments.

There's not usually much need to see a midwife (or doctor) before 10 weeks but you will have to ring to book one early. I chose a mw simply because she was female! But the general idea for maternity care is to have a midwife unless you have something serious that would require a higher level of care. If you're not sure, see your GP in the first instance. My GP sent me for my first early scan, just after 6 wks.

Then I found a midwife, by ringing Lincoln Maternity Centre, who set out a list that would travel there, as thats where I really would love to have bubs.

I first saw my MW at 7-8 weeks to see if we 'clicked', but that was actually after having a 7-week scan. My GP referred me for my first bloods and scan.

You must have a really good midwife. I'm in Chch and I'm seeing mine at 11 weeks. I rung the midwifery resource centre and I found a lovely midwife straight away. Like the others have said, I'd get in quick as it can be hard to get a MW. MW often don't see you till about 11 weeks (am not sure how far along you are) - I know I saw my GP up to that point, but you can discuss that with them when you call.

You can ring the midwifery resource centre (phone number in phone book) and they can tell you availability of midwives. Dr's have lists and usually recommend certain ones over others.

How far along are you? If you go to your local GP first, they'll give you a form for the first lot of blood tests and if you're unsure of your dates they might suggest an early scan to work out when you're due.
Most Drs will have a list of local midwives that they can put you in contact with. You just ring them up and arrange to meet them to see if you're happy having the take care of you throughout your pregnancy and labour.
Dr's visits are free for the first 14 weeks of pregnancy by the way.

Congratulations! What an exciting time.

We decided to have a midwife. There are very few doctors in the Wellington region that look after pregnant women and do births anymore and we had no medical reasons to insist on being under hospital care.

My midwife was fabulous. She was very capable, put me at ease completely. I do have a rare blood disorder which she wasn't familiar with so she referred me to the hospital for a couple of appointments to help her with decisions about aspects of my labour and she kept me informed 100%.

So, I've just found out I am pregnant *yay* and we are wanting to keep the baby. We did have some initial problems at the beginning, what with bleeding and things, but now that everything had cleared up I'm not sure what happns next

The woman I initially sopke to about it advised me to either find a GP (I've never really had one) or go straight to a midwife. Which is the better option? and who do I contact about Midwives in Christchurch City?

These must seem very stupid questions, but I'm very new to all of this
