Were lucky with Alyssa's DC as it is right next door to the kindy and primary school, Some kids are even taken to kindy sessions from DC. Then most of the kids go to the school next door when they are 5 so at least she should know some kids when she starts.
We've done private kindy (when we had a Nanny), Preschool 8-4 or sessions if you wanted and DC. We have never done public kindy because of work commitments. But out of them all I liked the preschool best of all as they were Montessori and when my girls started school they had already learnt the basics of writing, reading and Alex was particularly good at maths. Alyssa is in DC as the preschool doesn't take under two's and I have to work. This time I will probably leave her in DC right through as they seem to have a good learning programme for their older children.

I think you have to look at particular places and how they work rather than making a judgment based on what kind of centre they are.

While I was doing my B.Ed in ECE I visited lots of centres on practicum. Some kindys seemed to be more structured and 'educational' while others were less so, and some childcares were more so than others. It completely depends on the particular place.

As far as I'm concerned one of the benefits of kindy is that they are often near a school so children can get to know other kids they'll be going to school with. And one of the benefits of childcare is the ratios - I'm sorry but saying that children in childcare have everything done for them because there are more teachers is just not true. More teachers means they have more time to give children individual attention and know what their needs and strengths are - and more time to help them through things so they learn to do them themselves.

Having said that - of course it may be your experience of childcare that leads you to say that the teachers do everything for the children. What I should say is it is definitely not true of all childcare!

I am an early childhood educator teach at a full day learning/daycare centre i believe all early childhood education is benificial to childrens development and before you make any decisions you need to weigh up all your options for what suits you....playcentre, crech, kindy, daycare etc differ alot and it depends on your needs and what you want to get out of it for your child.

that said i believe that in any early childhood education/centres it is the teachers that make it as good or as average as it is. so you might want to spend a bit of time at each service observing the interactions between the children and teachers and also how the team work togeteher and ask about how they teach the children and watch what learning is happening.

See I'd argue the difference, Maya was at a traditional daycare from 5 mths and could have stayed there till she was 5, but I felt they didn't have the same emphasis on learning, even the 4 year olds just pretty much played. She did learn stuff, but they didn't have the concentrated reading/writing/numbers activties that they did at preschool.

Emma - yeah i know but preschool is different again to a traditional kindy....preschool / learning centres etc are basically what i would call DC..

I had to compare these 2 for an assignment I did. I did sent Vanessa a PM with the info so she may post it for you to have a look at.

My opinions - they both have their place and it depends on what you need for her. Do you need her to be cared for as you have things you have to do during the day, or is it that you want her to have some socialising with children her age??

biggest difference between kindy and daycare -

one you can work and send your kids to
the other you really cant be working full time and send them to....no idea how the heck i would get ella to and from a kindy session (9-12 30 and 12 45 til 3) or what i would do with her for rest of time

Day care is that...drop her off she spends the day, learning stuff etc....

We have had kids at both pre schools and kindy and I have to say it's really just a case of shopping around.

One pre school was useless and M picked up way more at Kindy.

J only went to kindy and did learn a bit but not a lot when he went to school, however the second he went to school he thrived. although I do believe a lot of them have changed now. I did love the teachers there and they did do some really good things.

A goes to pre-school and they have a wonderful programme for the kids including putting them in their groups for some age appropriate learning. A has known her full alphabet and colours and shapes and how to count up to 20 since just before three, and that comes down to pre school.

I like the fact the ages are different at pre school as once at school they are mingling with children older than them, so being little and around "Bigger Kids" has it's advantages.

Basically different environments and structures suit different children and I really suggest shopping around and observing the kids at these places and you will know what suits you and your girl.

Yep, I love playcentre as well, but I just didn't have the time to parent help, to be honest. Plus I know that by the time Jake gets to the end of this year he will need a bit more structure, hence preschool.

Not true either. Playcentre have some of the highest adult/child ratios. Yip its not structured like daycare but the kids get to choose what they want to learn about and then an adult takes it from there. It looks like they just run free but thats not the case. alot of our kindys have gone to 6hr sesions however alot are still sesional.
sarahs was 4+yr olds from 8.30-11.45 and under 4's from 12.45 -2.45 or 3.15

Maya was in daycare as a baby, but as soon as she hit three we put her into preschool. OK, so we chose a private Montessori preschool instead of a kindy, but the basic premise is the same - we felt that whilst daycare were providing an excellent care environment for Maya, they weren't providing the educational opportunities and stimulation that we felt she needed once she got older.
We'll do the same with the gremlins. I think, personally that daycare is just that. Day Care. They both have an education curriculum, though and like Biz said, kindy is a bit of a free for all in the beginning, but the benefit there is that all the kids are similar ages, so developmentally thats got to be a plus.

We do day care and kindy, well Pre School. Jake has just started at the pre school that is attatched to the school that Jake will be attending (a catholic one) so he is getting to know the kids he will be "growing up" with so to speak. The ratio there is 1 to 5 and the session he attends has only 20 kids in it. We absolutely love it.

We had decided that he would be doing kindy or whatever from 3.5 as I think by then he would need something more as he is a fairly smart kid, however a place came up for Jake at the pre school (our first choice) straight away, so we took it. When he moves uo to 3 morning sessions a week, (he does 2 afternoons atm) he will stop day care.

Wow, a novel!!! I'm just really loving the kindy thing, ATM.

ETA at our centre, the cares work with you in regards to TT and other things in the home. Jake is TT now, but wasn't when we started and they were great.

as a preshool teacher i gotta comment:) bizzy said it beautifully..there is a few minor differences like kindy has school holidays off and all teachers have to be registered and trained(which isnt necessarily the case with daycare although its heading that way.. ratios are bigger at kindy (roughly 1/15 but going to 1/10 and daycare is 1/7-8

Kindy may not be as structured as some day cares and that is especially so in the afternoon sessions...it is more about learning through play. However once the kids turn four they start morning sessions five days a week, and that has more structure and is designed more at getting the kids ready for school. My son has learnt so much about sea creatures and dinosaurs and all sorts of stuff i dont know yet and he has only been ding mornings for one term.

Not true at all!!!

Kindy may not be as structured as some day cares and that is especially so in the afternoon sessions...as it is more about learning through play.
However once the kids turn four they start morning sessions five days a week, and that has more structure and is designed more at getting the kids ready for school. It is still very much child led but they have definite rules and structures and a curriculum they have to follow too. My son has learnt so much about sea creatures and dinosaurs and all sorts of stuff i dont know yet and he has only been doing mornings for one term.
I know also that at the kindy my son attends they are working with some parents to help their children with communication and language skills and this is also true too of the local schools,in that they get involved with the kindy to get transition kids to school.

Day care is usually all day
