One thing I got told when I sat my license years ago is have a quick glance at intersections.

Defensive driving course is a good way of learning about hazards, weather etc

yeah i had one lesson with instructor before hand... it was fab.. there is about 3 different course they can take you on... just depends on which one you get to do..
i also got the road code out from library and did quick study on that for the hazards part...

Make sure than in the commentary bit... as well as spotting the hazards, you need to say what you're doing to avoid them. I didn't realise that, so the instructor made me pull over and explained again... after that it was all sweet and I passed with flying colours.

I did mine in June 2006 (when my licence expired). I failed mine the first time as I didn't look in the mirrors enough for the tester - I have since found out that he is a wanker and has had so many complaints about him.

I totally recommend having a few drives with a driving instructor as they go over the whole test with you.

I sat mine about 2 years ago now and I didn't have to parallel park only do a u turn in an 80k area and merge lanes. You also have to point out hazards which is basically anything on the road (parked cars, pedestrians, other cars, bikes etc)

If you have been driving for quite a while its pretty easy just drive like a nana, take off slowly don't follow too close etc. Make sure you look down every street you pass. When you are entering a new speed area speed up AFTER the sign (if its getting higher) or slow down BEFORE the sign (if its getting lower) so you have reached the new speed before you pass the sign.

Drive around the area you are doing it before hand so you feel comfortable with the roads and book it in for when its pretty quiet. Remember to indicate properly around roundabouts and go over all your give way rules (especially the what to do when there are no road signs)

i sat mine in last october.. i have had rest for 7 years LOL.. so bad..
not as hard as i thought... sit it during the day say about 11am less traffic pick a tues - thurs... always good
mirror check major thing - every 3 secs
hands on steering wheel... always check your speed..
You dont need to parallel park or anything like that.. you hardly actually need to do anyhting
you drive in urban area for about 10 - 15 mins.. then out in open roads like country or maybe a motorway what ever closer... then back to urban.. test should take about 45mins....

Good on you going for your full license! I really should go for mine. I think I'm a pretty good driver and confident on the roads, I've just never got around to it - $$ and nerves.

Yeah I recommend paying for 1 driving lesson before hand. They will show you the route that they are likely to test you on, and can give u good pointers on parallel parking etc. Just tell them exactly what u want to get out of the lesson!

I found backing around corners impossible,...but then they never asked me that. I also went at a smart time of the day 2pm. Check your mirror every three secends, have both hands on the steering wheel. You will have to parallel park, but its only with one car, not inbetween 2.

My biggest struggle was turning right at a roundabout, I was too nervous to just go for it! Someone behind me started tooting and that made it worse

In PN, if you get the first apmt of the day (8.30am?), by the time you get back for the final parallel park, they are still empty and you can just cruise right into them - and stop when you're straight ROFL

If you have to change speed, don't change until AFTER you hit the speed sign, that is very important!

They make you give a running commentary about potential hazards and what you are going to do to avoid them. eg "Road condition is dry. I am keeping to the left hand side. Passing a cyclist, I am giving them space. About to approach an intersection - checking both ways for cars".

I recommend taking a driving lesson with one of the companies first - they will take you on the potential test routes so that you can practice driving around with someone and you know where you are going.

I did this and it was def worth it! I sat mine last year.

DO IT!!!!! with a bubba a license is always a great idea....

practice before you go in...been a life time since i sat mine so i am no help there....but maybe do u turns, check out speeds over railway lines (they always used to take you over one in papakura when i sat it!!!) and reverses into a park....if you have those sussed you should be good on most others....check out speed signs in papakura so you know ahead of time as they chop and change a lot....worst case drive at 50 always!!!

check your mirrors - even if you dont need to...they like to see you doing that! dont turn radio on....even if they offer....and indicate your turns!!!

Well the title is pretty self-explanatory.

I've had my restricted for quite some time now, I was due to go for my full around the time I was expecting Lucas.

So my question is - What do they ask you to do? Is it hard? ...Do I have to know how to parallel park? (If so, I'm screwed lol) ....Any hints/tips?

I think I'm nervous more than anything, it can be rather daunting having a stranger sitting next to you judging your driving skills. And the money aspect, it's a lot of money to spend -I don't want to fail obviously.
