Like Maya's Maori name, Te Irirangi Marama, if you look it up in the dictionary can mean Restless Moon, Sky knowledge and a heap of other random things. But taken from the Ratana church it means 'the place where heaven and earth meet". My Maori tutor explained it beautifully to me once - that Te Irirangi is to do with souls that have passed on or are passing, and Marama is about knowledge and wisdom, so it is basically the passing of knowledge from a past generation.

A friend of ours got it for us when I was pregnant, because my partner cannot speak maori and didn't unsterstand me trying to explain, I can speak fluent Maori but alot of the words are hard to translate into english so that ppl can understand what they mean. But the book really helped him because it is easy to understand.
Sorry for my novel but I hope that helps you Jax.

If we had had a girl we had decided to give her a maori/cook island name (lewis' family) and a japanese name (we lived in japan for sseveral years). But with boys, we had a hard enough time agreeing on the first names!!

It is my brothers name and he passed away 6 years ago so I wanted it so that Xanda always has a part of his uncle with him. We were considering a second middle name but the poor boy already has two names that are hard for ppl to spell.

You are right they are not used everyday. Shawn has two middle names (william don) and so does my sister. It is more common than people think!
