I must admit when I saw the email my first thought was "but surely the people who are struggling that much won't have internet over food and therefore won't get this email????"

To be honest I think they are painting a worse picture than what it is. Yes we are a nation with high debt which is scary (including our family) but honestly I don't think every single family is suddenly on the brink of starvation!

Mm, good point about the difference between actually struggling and needing to economise. Even though I complain about how thing are more expensive and we're having to watch our spending, I'm not actually having to do without essentials, I still get luxuries and I can still pay the mortgage. Not to do the "back in the old days" thing, but I remember when I was a kid, we had some much less than DH and I do now, and we easily survived with 6 kids on a teacher's salary. I think the ideas about how to economise are good - you often lose track of where your money goes and how you could actually be smarter with it.

Has anyone read the North and South article this month? Yes you need to think about the money you spend, people have been buying things and paying them off for years in NZ and maybe that needs to be thought about a little more.

Yes it is hard and will be untill some thing changes but def not struggling to eat or what ever...we still go out and have occational spending spree...so I guess We are finding it harder but not struggling as yet!! I agree Liz and that's why I won't be responding as I don't consider us as "struggling" although the rise in food and petrol prices does affect us in the sense that if I buy the same groceries I did a year ago I wouldn't be able to buy other stuff and I don't just drive for the sake of it as much anymore. I guess we're what you'd consider a 'normal' double income family but we don't fit into their criterea.

But it sounds like what Sunday star times are doing - purposely looking for people who ARE struggling, to illustrate that we all are. When in fact, they should look at normal families and see how they are economising.
