I got mine when I was 14 1/2 so it doesn't follow the mothers footsteps for when they are likely to get it.

We have been talking about it frequently so when it actaully happens it wouldn't be so akward...I think that has worked. We also talk about boobs and appropriate clothing, pimples, hairly armpits, face care etc etc.

I have actually enjoyed having the little chats with her as it is stuff that is strickly "girls stuff" which I thinks she enjoys.

And Kels....we had fun going shopping for pads

and stuff. Im sure we will have lots of fun when we go out to celebrate also

DD got hers last year being 11.8yrs and she was so excited lol. We celebrated by going out for mocachinos(sp?) and cake then onto the supermarket to buy MORE (yes its never ending) girly things like impulse, face creams, cleaners, fancy shavers etc. She was so excited about her fancy pads too. It was just the 2 of us.

...and here I was worried when the time came and turned out to be a whole heap of girly teenager fun!

Emz get him his first lesson on how to do the washing? hahaha Ill let DP deal with it but id hate to think what he would do prolly sneak the poor boy into his first strip joint hahaha

Yeah children are going through puberty a lot younger now, I did a big paper on it but now cos of baby brain can't even remember why? I think just a lot of environmental factors. Oh, now what should I do for Jack when he gets his first wet dream?

cos that's all about making sure the things work for boys...

Aw how lovely that your parents treated it so special! I was so excited when I got mine- all my friends had it and I was desperately wishing for it for months (I was 12- little did I know...). My friend got taken out for dinner and I remember being so jealous- I think the dinner/jewellery thing is a lovely idea. I'll be doing it with my girls

I was one of the lucky ones who also got hers at 8

. Aaaaaand I was away at my penpals house. And I had nooooo idea what was going on - to be honest I thought I'd crapped myself!! I vividly remember when I got mine - I told my mum, who gave me one of my sisters pads to use. Then I went into my bedroom and sat on my bed - Dad was walking past my window outside and he looked in, pointed at me and started laughing

She has been growing little boobies for the last couple of years so I knew it was imminent! We are really close and I think talking about it regularly amongst other stuff has made it pretty easy for her to talk to me about that sort of stuff...eg armpit hairs, bras, pimples and skin care, appropriate clothing for 'young ladies'.

I might take her to get her nails done, or a eyelash tint (she has georgous long eyelashes). Then I think a nice dinner. I might also check out the local jewelers and see what they have.

I want to do something special cos its one of those things you remember forever!

My DSD was 8 when she got hers

We just recently gone through this with my Step DD as well and I didn't even think to buy her something special to mark the 'occasion'..

12 is the average age I think - youngest is typically 8, so maybe some of you need to be having those talks pretty soon!

I was 12 when I had mine, my sister was at least 14+ (I moved out of home not long before she turned 14, but she was a late developer anyway)

I wanna give our girls something like a purity ring, but I'll get them to wear it on their right hand so it is not confusing. That way it can stay on their right hand well after they get married too if they like.

oh goodness - scary my daughter is 10 (just turned) i thought I had a couple of years at least. she knows the birds and the bees and why we have a period. I haven;t really sat down and told her if you get this coming out this is what you do etc..... maybe better get onto that - sure she knows but no hard in making sure!

OMG I'm so not ready for all that. I've done the talk and got the pads etc but Natasha is 12.6 now and nothing so far but the pimples have started bummer.
Such a nice idea to do something special though so I will now be thinking of ideas too.
You could do the facial thing or have your nails done. But I really think a piece of jewelery is such a lovely idea, it's something to keep forever.

Exactly! It's supposed to be taught at Year 5/6 but so many schools are prudish. What's the point in teaching them at Year 7/8 (some schools even 9/10

) when most of them have already gone through it?!

Get her ears pierced if she hasn't already, take her to get a facial or her nails done... What an awesome mum you are!
I got my period when I was 10 and my mum yelled at me for leaving the toilet in a mess.
Take her out for dinner and get her something special I reckon :D
Oh oh and teach her that when the boys find her pads/tampons (which they WILL) and try to make fun of her, for her to gross them out by explaining EXACTLY what the pads/tampons are for. Ok so I know this is far from being baby related....other than technically my daughter can now have a baby of her own

Yes, my little girl just got her first period!

Both of us have been waiting for it and are both prepared for it.

My question is...I want to do something special with her to celebrate her begining of womanhood! My mum took us out to dinner and gave us a ring with a little key on it (key to womanhood). I want to do something similar...any ideas other than the above?

She is 11 years old (not that far off for some of your DDs)
