I did them over two Saturdays at 6 hours a go, and if you can imagine sitting on a hard chair, very pregnant for 6 hours, it wasn't comfortable. Plus it was all about labour and delivery options when what I really wanted to know about was what I was supposed to do once bubs arrived. I figured the midwide and/or docs would talk me thru the labour and birth thing but once bubs was home I was on my own.

I had an epidural with Maya, delivered her at 8.11am and transferred to Birthcare at around 11am. If you have a c-sect (I THINK???) they will arrange an ambulance, but if you have a normal delivery you have to have your own transport.

I thought Birthcare was only for people who used Auckland City Hospital and who lived in Auckland City as opposed to North Shore City or South Auckland or Waitakere???? I could be wrong though!

It ran for 4 weeks for 3 hours each week....long long night (started at 6pm and finished at 9pm). I went there when I was 32 weeks. They say you should book in from 28 weeks but no one told me ....until some one in oh baby mentioned it and I had to beg the lady to fit me in those classes!!!

Any way it was bit dissapointing because all they covered was the labour, pain, baby at birth and pain relief etc....and very short quick "why the baby is crying lesson"!!! ...was good for my hubby tho. Oh and one week included the tour of the hospital (which was really really good) specially because I saw the theater and said nah I wont come in this room and I ended up there.....I was very relaxed because of it!

Also, is a great way to make "mummy" friends - we've already had one get together and the people are all really nice. I'd highly recommend going - the sooner the better - they do book up really fast....

My midwife said i should do it sooner rather than later as they book up fast - but I have booked one starting mid April and Birthcare didnt say anything about them being over booked or anything. I think they run them in all different areas of Auckland too. It cost $25 and you get two booklets.

Also a friend suggested that the antenatal classes dont talk about when the baby comes home, so I was considering doing another class for that - but not sure at this stage.

This is my first baby, and I understood that I had to deliver in a hospital but that if everything goes Ok they would kick me out as soon as possible, so my plan, so far is to deliver at Auckland hospital and then go to Birthcare in Parnel for 1 or 2 nights.

Edited by ErinC

It is not too much of a hassle.

I was planning to be doped up to the eyeballs when I delivered hence staying at NS but ended up having no drugs and tranferring about an hour after Quinn was born. I was too scared to commit to delivering any where else 'cause I wanted drugs and I got it stuck in my head that I would have to travel too far in traffic?

Anyway, antenatal classes. I did them at North Shore, it was free. I did it quite late in my pregnancy as I was slack so instead of the normal number of classes we had the intense three times three hour classes. Very full on! Got the tour of the hosp. I think there is a number to phone, I could get it for you if you want to phone up and book?

I'm wondering if it's worth going "stuff it" and delivering at Birthcare as well and skipping the hospital altogether ?? She mentioned that I could stick to delivering at Auckland if I wanted (in relation to my other post about maybe changing midwives), but I felt that was a bit odd. We'll see, I feel like I am losing control of what's going on a bit at the moment.

They will run antenatal classes there, and will probably do a tour of their delivery rooms and postnatal wards etc. One great thing about antenatal classes is meeting other parents to be. It is good to talk about labour/birth, see videos etc, and is especially good for hubbys as they dont really know much about it all. They need to be prepared to. Hope that helps.
