You'll find that bigger ram is actually cheaper :)

I recently upgraded to 2 x 1gb sticks in my laptop and each was around $40.. they're pretty cheap..

Nothing wrong with having more either... it certainly wont hurt..
If you've already got 2 x 512s then your best bet is to get 2 x 1gbs.. maximum for most laptops is a total of 2 anyway.

The extra ram will certainly help with running multiple programmes at once. As programmes use up memory.. if you dont have much to use, they dont run as efficiently :)

A defrag is short for Disk Defragmenter, which can be found in your start menu > accessories > system tools.
It is a computer program which comes standard with Windows which basically rearranges files stored on your harddisk which can speed things up, but in your case I don't think this is going to fix the problem.

You can access the clear cookies and temp internet files by going to Tools > Internet Options within your web browser and you should see "delete" buttons within there. Also in the start menu > accessories > system tools there is a "disk cleanup" option you can use to delete temp files.

Reformatting your laptop means you're basically reinstalling the operating system (XP or Vista or whatever you use)which yes will always speed things up, but is often a last resort if spyware and antivirus software doesn't do the trick. You would want to make sure you save all the data you want to keep from your laptop before you start, and also you need a restore/recovery disk with the operating system on it which should have come with the laptop.. unless your laptop has a recovery partition which means you can reformat without a disk.

I have absolutely no idea. 1g of ram should be plenty... so you might want to look elsewhere for trying to sort out load times. Stacey ...my laptop is running incredibly slow at the moment. I'm not entirely sure why it's declined so much, it takes a good 5-10 minutes just to open folders to view files/photos ...SO FRUSTRATING!

I'd like to have several programs open at once...currently I can only have one program open at a time and even then it STILL takes AGES to load. It's such a pain.

Can anyone help me out here?

My Laptop is a Toshiba A200 series, can't find the exact model number & have gone through all the manuals and stickers on the back of computer to no avail. BUT I did unscrew the area where the RAM is stored, I have 2 x PC2-5300's (512MB) each. Ideally I wanted to upgrade to 2GB, but if I buy 1GB it will only be 1.5GB, so I'm considering buying 2GB RAM (and hoping like hell that my computer can take that much ...I have no idea about these things...).

If PC2-5300 is what's printed on the RAM is that the number I have to look for? Any places you can suggest purchasing RAM from for a reasonable price? I know places like Bond & Bond charge the earth!
