I refuse to use glass bottles. They are such a safety risk IMO. Daniel likes feeding himself and then when hes done he will play with his bottle and gets sh*tty as if you don't let him. I can see him taking his bottle and bashing it against something and smashing it.. no way will I risk that!

They're a heap different from other bottles. See www.adiri.com and you'll see what I mean as even the look is quite different. They're a soft bottle so they're more like a breast than anything else that is available. They won't break like glass, and they're polycarbonate and BPA free. They hold 8oz (236 ml).

My daughter trialled it last night. She's never been a bit bottle fan, though that seems to be changing lately and she was quite happy to give it her seal of approval. Yeah fair enough cuppatea. I guess I just have a pretty lax attitude when things haven't been proven. I kind of figure what sort of environment I grew up in where pretty much everything was OK and I turned out fine. But anyone that knows me knows I'm pretty cruisy with this sort of stuff once I've done my research and made my decision.

I can understand what you are saying Emz and at the moment we are still using the plastic bottles but remember it wasn't that long ago that tabacco was advertised as being beneficial to health and that they were saying that absestos was ok. The uk government for years said that the beef was ok but it wasn't and eventually they admitted to it. I am extremely skeptical whenever the gov says something is safe. I'm pretty sure dummies are classed as safe as they're silicone (just like the teats) not plastic.

I think most of this is the media trying to scaremonger. If it was a serious threat, the govt (health authority) wouldn't have released a statement about them being perfectly safe to store infant food in.

Also, some formula tins, drink bottles, ready-to-eat meal containers, sauce bottles etc contain BPA. So if you're really worried about it you should research that and cut all of that stuff out too. Apparently (according to the research) even some cans of food contain it as during the production process it is used with the tin to create the can. So basically you would need to grow/kill your own food to be completely out of harms way. But then there's also oranges, coke etc etc that are worse than the threat mentioned here *apparently* yet we still consume those?

KA - I think you put the glass bottles in boiling water to sterilise. But Ethan's old enough now anyway that you could just pour boiling water over them if you were worried. We have Adiri bottles. Believe me the NZ Distributor has been trying to get these through for months. The problem was that the US demand for them far outstripped the supply on their first order. They had to do a whole new delivery and again the US demand won out. That's why it's taken forever to get them here. I got them from natures baby and i think they were about $7 each. You could always go the medela route if you don't like the idea of glass.

To be honest I would think the reason they haven't banned them is simply because there hasn't been an alternative. Glass bottles don't work for everyone.

The Adiri Bottle has only just made it into the country. We've been waiting for them since July last year, and goodness knows what sort of volumes they've been able to bring in as it's been really hard for international retailers to source them due to demand being so high. Looking at Stacey's list of suitable bottles I'm not sure how many are actually in New Zealand.

i truly dont want to argue about this:) but... this statement has been around for at least a year... and only now have they said this..my Mum showed it to me in the paper when i was pregnant (early on)as well if there is a minute chance it's harming babies why would NZ allow it at all..that makes no sense to me?so if it's proven why don't they ban them:(

We researched this to death when we heard about the news article. For us it was more the small chance that this could be doing some danger to Sam. When I was at nature baby buying the last 2 glass bottles the women and I were talking about it and she said something very profound, which totally made the whole point. This whole plastic thing may be blown all out of proportion but... am i willing to bet my childs life on it    
My MIL works at a baby shop and they had a statement from Avent stating that they would not be doing anything about it in NZ as the laws don't require it, this to me was appalling. Also that two countries have now banned the use of these plastic bottles. I know its a personal thing, but I've done a lot of research on the plastic thing, and the percentage that fully FF babies could get is 5-10% of the safe limit per day. Adults in their everyday lives get about 10% so we're all getting it. And it hasn't been proven to do anything in humans, only in labrats who are known to get cancer from anything injected as they inject amounts that a human could consume into a rat that can't process it IYKWIM.

Plus, its not just heating in the microwave for plastic bottles, its even putting warm breastmilk or hot water in.

If you do buy glass bottles, be very careful. If you are in Auckland Nature Baby has a store in Grey Lynn. Otherwise over the web is fine. I have done both and no problems either way. They are actually cheaper than the plastic bottles believe it or not. I love ours!!! The only advise I can offer though is to get the clear silicon teats. Sam won't have a bar of the natural rubber ones!!!

Try american sites get a group of ya's to split the cost and buy in bulk. Ok so I have been EVERYWHERE online trying to find the glass evenflo bottles and they are all out of stock. Baby factory do the glass Nuk ones but now apparently there are bottles that arent 100% glass or something plunket was saying that are no good anyway so she said if you are going with glass stick with the evenflow or Nuk and dont buy the asian stuff.

I'm pretty sure Evenflo do glass bottles too, I would imagine there would be some baby stores that stock those.

Good post to start, I woudl like to know this as well. I've just bought an electric steriliser so that I don't microwave things as I knwo that it can release toxins from plastic.
