Author: LuluBelle85
Subject: 17523
Posted: 23 May 2008 at 10:54am

I do pre-health at the moment (finish next month, yay) and there are oodles of people who are just doing cells, or combining it with one other paper etc etc. So yes, you can spread it out.

Cells is definately the most intense course (it's not exactly hard, but it is a LOT of information to process). It also has the most tech hours per week (5 hours... 2 x 2 hour classes plus 1 x 1 hour lecture). So getting it out of the way would be quite a good idea i guess.

I'm meant to be in cells class right now, but I wasn't feeling well this morning....

I would suggest you go down to CPIT and see somene from the nursing school. I know a lot of people im my classes who are planning to specialise in neonatal nursing, but I don't know much about how it works to specialise in areas (because I'm going into midwifery, not nursing).

HTH's!
Feel free to ask any pre-health questions... I love the course! Most days.... lol.

Edited by booweeza

    Author: ShellandBella
Subject: 17523
Posted: 23 May 2008 at 10:50am

There is no nursing course specifically to be a neonatal nurse (except perhaps on a postgraduate level)...you will have to get a bachelor of nursing through cpit where you come out as a general comprehensive nurse which allows you to work in ANY area of nursing (mental health, hospitals, GP practice, rest homes, etc.). As a rule of thumb, if you want to work in a hospital, you will then have to do a year long graduate nurse programme (GNP) which all the major DHB's run where you usually work in two different areas (you may be able to elect to work in the neonatal unit) and THEN you have to apply for a permanent position IF one is available.

I did my GNP in Melbourne, then when I came back to NZ I applied for a job in theatre. But the GNP is pretty much a pre-requisite to being able to work in an acute hospital.

Any other questions, just PM me...

So you could be a neonatal or plunket or anything really.

Midwifery is just midwifery.

I either want to do nursing or study to be a midwife. Either way i have to do Pre Health. But the thing is i want to work with babies, but not sure if you can just study to be a neonatal nurse.

Next thing is, i need to do pre health, so was thinking if i just do the cells, tissues and human body part of that course this year as i dont want to put Kylah in daycare and i can do a night class, part time would that mean when i do start the pre health full time next year i wouldnt have to do that part right? Would that mean that i would have less work to do next year?

Im confused. I really want to lean more towards nursing, but want to work with babies.. How do i do that? Does anyone know?

Thanks :)
