I used to have this problem but I changed my washing technique and getting heaps better results.

I use slightly more than 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent (probably 2/3). I was finding 1/2 wasn't quite enough. I also use the presoak setting on the washing machine, so prior to washing it gets a soak for about 2 hours in the detergent and then does the wash. Do you wash them in cold or warm?? I have just started washing my nappies in a warm wash (I always did cold before) and have found I don't get the nasty smells anymore. I used to have to use detol twice a week, but now it's probably once every 10 days if that.

I think putting them in the dryer makes them smell more too.... well I'm sure mine do. I don't really like the smell of tea tree oil. I could sniff lemon verbena all day tho

I'd do both, give them a good scrub with dishwashing liquid, then maybe a wash with white vinegar and baking soda. Followed by a day in the sun (if its around)..

Surely if you do all of that it will smell better.

I usually use lemon verbena oil rather than tea tree oil in my wash (once a week type thing) and my inserts and clothes smell yuuuuummy after that. I'm sure there was a post on this but I cant find anything.  Toms inserts are really smelling...even after they have been washed.  Even after washing with a dettol rinse or with tea tree oil!  I hate the smell of them and as we havent been able to hang them out I smell it in the dryer all day!

 

Any ideas?  Do you think they need stripping or just good ol fashioned sun?
