Neither of us take breaks really, tend to eat at our desks. Once a month we do take a long lunch on friday (1.5 hours or so). We rarily finish late though, as we go in early. We are home by 5.45pm every day.

If we have to leave early or come in late its not a problem cos both our bosses know we make up the hours.

Swings in round abouts.

No-one really pays o/t anymore, your agreement will state that you are required to work the hours needed to complete the job (I write Employment Agreements). Unless you are casual or part time....

it does suck though, he needs to have more work/life balance!!!!

    Author: kebakat
Subject: 17733
Posted: 29 May 2008 at 4:34pm

For everyone out there that works, do you (or partner/hubby) ever work overtime when it's not required and you don't get paid for it?

DH's hours are 8:30-5:30, with a 1 hr lunch break. He never takes his morning/avo breaks and never takes his full hour lunch break. Then he doesn't leave work til 5:45 or 6 usually, sometimes it's later, much later. Which doesn't sound like much but it adds up.

Sometimes he'll be away at a school like say in the hawkes bay and can't leave til late and gets home at 8pmish which he could actually put in a claim for overtime for.. or he can take it as time in lieu but he never does.

They don't get paid overtime in general because it's unnecessary. It's 9 times outta 10 nothing that can't wait until tomorrow and their company has a philosophy that if their business model requires overtime to do day to day business then that's a bad business model. They will however get paid overtime if its a huge urgent job and they have gone above and beyond (which is very rarely required)

It annoys me that DH leaves work late cronically as he gets nothing back for it and that just makes dinner etc later and later which is a pain as I'd like to get Daniel eating with us but he won't wait until DH finally gets home.

And then when he really does need to work overtime he never takes the time back which he is totally entitled to.

Then he burns himself out. Starts being a right grump. Finally takes annual leave and spends the time recovering rather than enjoying himself.

Does that sound like I'm being picky or is he being a bit silly?

DH thinks its fine but admits hes always tired.

Edited by kebakat
