No I don't blame the government- I would say those people who made those comments aren't terribly educated on what the government actually does. Or what is happening in the rest of the world.

What needs to happen is for more pressure to be put on car companies (and stupid oil companies) who own therights to technology for cars that run on alternative fuels. Its ridiculous that the vast majority of cars still being produced have giant engines- if you want a family car (5+ seat 4-5door etc) its pretty hard to find one thats any less than a 2000cc which is insane. Car companies are releasing new 'family' cars for 2009 which have 3-4L engines! If you manage to blimmin buy one of the monsters theres no way a family can afford to run the things! It soooo gets on my nerves. A scientist will invent a car that runs on hydrogen etc and the oil companies will offer them millions for the technology patent then bury it so it eliminates the potential for competition.

I agree - and let's not forget the free under 5's doctor's visits. Ok so where I am it costs a $16 surcharge but it would be much more if it wasn't for this policy.

They need to put more money into our education  My son is special needs and he is damn lucky that he got the ORRS funding as there is some kids out there that don't get kind of funding at all or enough support from a teacher aide. The speech therapists don't get paid enough so a lot of them move on and go private. This is where the money should be sent    I don't care about the petrol prices rising and farmers need to get a lot more money for their dairy and meat but I hate seeing special needs kids that get very little or no support from the government makes me angry

NO they aren't to blame, and Labour as a socialist goverment has done a lot to help people. WFF, interest fee student loan, kiwisaver gave everyone who signed up $1000.
I do think they could have made tax cuts sooner, when we had a large surplus not wait until the economy is slowing.

And I think something could be done about the cost of dairy products, Fonterra is a monopoly in this country and steps should be put in place to make milk, butter and cheese more economical.

So ok they can't control the price of petrol as we buy it in from overseas so are held over a barrel on that one but there tax on it is a percentage, if they changed it so a set rate per litre then that would help no end. Don't forget everytime petrol goes up they pocket more in tax, why do they need that extra money? they don't, they didn't have it last year, they didn't have it 4 years ago when I moved here and petrol was a $1.14 a litre. I don't blame the current world food and petrol crisis on the little ole NZ government either and I think those that do need to sit down and think about it a bit more carefully.

Personally, I am finding it really hard to even find one single policy that National has. All they seem able to do is tell us they'll not be doing what Labour is doing, or they'll do it bigger and better. Can he not get his party to actually get some real policies out there? Yeah, petrol prices - the USA. Or, actually, George Bush. Him and his imaginary "weapons of mass destruction". What a joke. All he really wanted was to get control of the oil in Iraq, and look what happened. He totally farked it up for the rest of the world.

Rising costs of everything, well that really comes back to the petrol prices being so high, everything else needs to go up as well for suppliers to make any money.

I think alot of people take "luxuries" as "necessities" Though I think families less than single people in general, and I blame businesses/advertising for creating that mindset. Nobody in new zealand can't afford to live, so I am not complaining. We don't have a car and get on just fine, so petrol doesn't affect us.

Petrol prices I blame on the USA...

Cost of living, the reserve bank. Though as a way of combatting the nations over spending. There is a huge spending culture here, very consumer driven. The reserve bank put the interest rates up to slow down the spending, now the property market has softened and living expenses have gone up... people are slowly starting to stop spending on luxuries because they can not afford it. Eventually the the rates will come down, the salaries will go up and the cycle will start again.

Not sure what a new government will do. Perhaps limit the amount of overseas investment to keep those interest rates down??? It's definitely a global problem - not a local government one.

I think the government has done a pretty good job with the welfare measures for NZer's and I find it sad that people are saying National will get in simply because people 'want a change'. I'm not sure. Obviously petrol is outside of our control but I can't say I'm too impressed with them rising interest rates all the time. I was pleased with the WFF tax credits that came in, but, I dunno. I don't have much confidence in Labour anyhow as they keep making laws that the average NZer doesn't want - but they make them anyway.

I think the govt should have done a heaps better job on the budget that just came out. It really was quite lame and that's a stupid thing in election year. No...although considering the taxes on petrol they could look at reducing that slightly as they will be getting more as the cost per litre is so much more expensive.

no - in the sunday star times it had an interesting article about the cost of living in Aus. MUCH more than NZ even when you take into account the dollar difference.
I think the gove3rnment does heaps to help people actually. i also think the average NZer (myself inclouded) is up to their eyeballs in debt - hps, loans etc, so there is very little "wiggle room" when something like rising interest rates happens. I don't think so. People are pretty quick to blame the government, but things like petrol prices, housing market slumps, grocery prices are worldwide. The problem with THIS government is that they don't seem to want to do much to help the average NZer. Whether another party will be any better is yet to be seen, but I have my doubts. Nope I don't think it is as it is a worldwide thing and all different countries have all different governments.

For rising petrol and grocery costs?

I'm just watching 3 News and there is a segment about why Labour is down in the polls and why people are voting against them, and a few people have said it's coz the cost of living has gotten so expensive.

But is that really the government's fault? It's not just a NZ thing, it's happening overseas as well.
