I had a root canal and 2 fillings (1 amalgam) while pregnanct with my first. Dentist was more careful but said things would be fine - and they were.

I see the dentist again tomorrow (18 wks pg) and expect to need at least 1 more filling.

I have just come out of hospital (long story) where several specialists said, and I quote - "no one in their right mind would have an xray while they are pregnant".

They say an exception would be a foot or hand xray where you 'could' wear a protective cover - but some still gets through and it's not a good idea. As for a 'body' xray I got given all the gory details of how the molecular structure of a fetus/baby is changed with xrays and although if born perfectly healthy there is no way of knowing "what" was changed by the rays and what effect it would have later in life.

sometimes a tooth mightnt be hurting and it has infection spreading into the nerve, so they recommend a filling before it turns into a root canal.
But, it probably could have waited just a bit longer

I'm so angry from seeing that, my stupid dentist made me get one after saying its perfectly fine. KA I remember when you got it done, you HAD to have it otherwise you could've got an infection which would have been worse (and those sorts of things could lead to prem labour). there is a type of injection the dentist can use that is fine during pregnancy (and one that isnt so great,but i cant think what it is )

its amalgam fillings they are more wary of doing, if its just a smallish one its not such a big deal, i've had plenty of pregnant women come in for fillings etc,one of the main reasons dentists recommend holding it off , is because its uncomfortable for some pregnant ladies

i've had three white fillings (6 injections!) and a wisdom tooth out (two injections). Perhaps the amalgum (sp?) ones could be bad cuz of the mercury in them?
