We got two free with our DVS. we have one in the hallway and one in our bedroom, next to my side of the bed.

and we've noticed when it hasn't been on, it definately does make a difference.
we have the one in our room on all night, i like it for that reason and that its safe to leave on overnight

Oil heaters are at there worst (cost wise) when they're heating up. If you were to leave it on all the time it would use less power than turning it off and on all the time. Our house is freezing!! We have two convector heaters on when someones home. We have a fireplace but need to get some wood. Also landlords suppose to be retrofitting the place some time soon. They're great- my grandparents had them and swore by them (they really feel the cold). They had one in each of their rooms and found they were perfect- I remember seeing on here they cost 5-9c an hour to run but oil fin heaters are 22-45c p/h- thats a huge difference especially as power costs are only going to go up! We had them in our last house and have just ordered them for this house.

IMHO they are only good for bedrooms and as Cuppatea said they work more like a night store so take the chill off rather than heat. That said in our bedroom we didn't need any other heating and I was never cold and this was in a 100 year old house. I don't think they would work in the lounge.

We left ours on 24/7 and you didn't even notice a change in the powerbill. It never got so hot that you couldn't touch it. As cuppatea said, you would have to hold your hand on it for a very long time and even then it wouldn'y actually burn your hand.

You can touch it without it burning, you would only get burnt if you held your hand on it for a while.

DH looked at these. The part that really bugged us about them was that the panel heats up to 75 degrees which can easily burn. We have one in Spencers room, the largest one. It keeps the chill off but it doesn't heat as such. I wouldn't recommend them for a large space.
It says on their website that they aren't designed to heat just to keep the chill off. On really cold nights it probably keeps Spencers room at about 14, last night it was -2 out and when I went into him at 5.40am this morning his room was 15 degrees.

we are looking at getting one for Rhiannons room and one for the lounge of our new house.

we are sadly leaving behind our heat pump and the new place is cold cold cold
