We had a big party for Kahtrell's 1st birthday with family coming from all over the place. We didn't serve alcohol, some of the men brought beers, and when it was all over my sisters and I, and my mates from high school had some drinks together, but they brought their own stuff.
You don't need to supply alcohol if you don't want to . It never occured to me the have alcohol at Jack's first birthday until Mum mentioned something to me, she said that some people might like a drink with their lunch - I was sort of out voted by the family. It didn't bother me and as I don't drink much and didn't want the expence I made it BYO. Some people bought a few beers or a bottle of wine but it was very low key, plus adults out numbered kids at the party.

I have a strict no alcohol policy at all kid related things- birthdays, naming days etc. Only because FIL is an alcoholic and I don't want my kids being exposed to that kind of drinking. For both my boys 1st birthdays we have had BBQ's. Andrew's was a lunch at my parents place and there was beer there (and I think wine). Josh's was a dinner and there was beer and wine there - Nigel's cousin was getting right into the wine and ended up a little drunk - good thing he is a funny drunk.

The last two 1st birthday parties I have been to, both had beer and wine as there were a lot of adults at the party. Mind you, nobody got drunk, it was just a lunchtime drink if any of the adults wanted one... which a lot of them did! If you don't mind if people drink but don't want to supply it, you could make it BYO.

I have been to 1st birthday's where there has been alcohol and some where there hasn't, doesn't really matter.

We have never had alcohol at kids parties and probably never will (until their 21sts maybe ) but then we are largely an alcohol free house anyway. hadn't occured to me either, we are having a midday party and making a non alocholic fruit punch for the adults and water and watered down fruit juice for the kids. I guess it also depends on the time of the day of the party.....

We always have alcohol at Sienna's parties and we will for the twins party as well, I think mainly as there are adults but also because thats they type of friends we have and our parties tend to be large about 50 people we make it more for the kiddies during the afternoon and then later on at night for the adults, both her 1st and 2nd party ended way after 1am.

Like I said before we had a huge party for Zaara's 1st. Started at 6pm and was at a hall....and because it is mainly for adults we had beer (we had to get a licence to serve it at the venue).

It's totally up to you.  We haven't served alcohol at either of Michaela's parties.  Truth be told it never actually occured to me to serve alcohol at her first birthday (that'll be the sleep deprivation) and her 2nd birthday party was at morning tea time (DH doesn't like me to start drinking until lunch)

 

Clare is right though, the first birthday is more about you and celebrating the fact that you've been parents for a year and are about to embark on toddlerdom.  If you want to serve booze go ahead, otherwise be sure to crack open a bottle once everyone has gone home and toast yourselves for making it to 1 yo.

We had bubbly at Joshua's first birthday party.

Really, the first birthday party is far more for the parents (IMO). We had only a couple of kids there, mostly it was adults, with adult food and bubbly for those who wanted it.
