Fair enough then. Yeah.

I'm kinda the opposite to my BIL who is a teacher, he loves teaching year 6-8s, whereas I wouldnt want to.

I had 2 choices I liked, littlies or teaching science/chem at high school. Then I had way to many flash backs about what nasty little asses we were to our teachers in high school and decided against it lol

As don't you need a primary degree to teach at primary level. Short answer yes..

Long answer.. I'm not enrolled for the degree yet as they dont accept enrollments for that degree in the 2nd semester, only the first and there is an interview process to go through. But I've enrolled in a certificate to do 2 papers that can be cross credited to the degree. I'll enrol for the degree later this year. Nah DH answered most of it. It's not the degree we were talking of but its very similar. I need to chat with massey because the only things left uncertain is the planning of how I can do it and only they can help with that part. I know at Massey going extramural and starting with one paper a semster (as i do) i belive the papers start at $400 then add books ontop of that.

I hear you on the 'I don't think I want to do this forever' thing. I'm at the same loose end.

I second, third, fourth (whatever!) the idea of talking to someone about it. Like a careers advisor at Careers Services or something? Hi Stacey

i have been in a similar situation at a couple of times in my working career.

When I left school i went to Uni and did 2 years of a science degree (which i had done all through school). Didn't like it,left with no qualification to show for it and a student loan. Went back to working in hospitality before i decided to do my chef training. Did really well at this and loved every minute of it but got to the stage where i decided i needed something more of a challenge plus more money for working less hours.

Really scary as I didn't want to start something new again, find out I didn't like and end up with more debt and no qualification.

What i did was looked for a small certificate (4 papaers only) in the field i was interested in (Business) that I could do extramurally. This certificate was then a stepping stone to a diploma and then to a degree.

Did the certificate extramurally (paid for the papers as i went) while still working 70+ hours a week as a chef over the course of a year and absolutely loved it and did really well. Finished the year and actually had a new qualification.

Left chefing and went full time study for a year (as an adult student so Government did give me some money towards living costs) to complete the diploma level and then went and found a full-time job in this field while finishing my degree part-time.

Now work half as many hours as I did chefing and get paid twice as much and work in a field that is really interesting and diverse.

Was hard work working and studying at the same time and i didn't have any children to worry about (just my Partner who is now DH). But defintely think it is worth the effort.

Now i am about to give up work while on a years maternity leave to have my first child but have recently started up a business of my own as well so have that to content with along with a newborn.

Take your time when looking and I would defintely reccomend looking for a programme that can let you do it in stages. I'm thinking ahead of what I want to do career wise etc.

I love what I'm doing at the moment. My business is doing really well with some mammoth orders keeping me busy. But the things is that it doesn't take a lot of brain power to do what I'm doing and I don't think I could do it really long term and make it like a career type thing, I think my brain will get bored eventually.

I started doing Vet (did a year and 1/2) and did really well. I was an A+ student but realised it wasn't for me so I left Massey. I didn't see the point of continuing in a very expensive degree that I wasn't going to use in the end.

I'd like to study again, very part time maybe extramural. I have a couple of ideas that I like but it's not in the science area where I excel in and have done all through high school/uni etc so I'm a bit nervous.

Plus I am totally unsure when it comes to any form of study now. Because it costs so much and I don't want to add to my big student loan anymore we would pay for it as I did it. And I don't want to do what I did last time, to start something and figure out its not for me.

Any ideas how I could sort myself out and settle my nerves etc? I'm not going to do anything until next year at the earliest. Has anyone else had this problem.
