I used tampons for post partum bleeding.
Well... after two weeks anyway.
I hate pads with a passion and it was driving me absolutely nuts having to use them. My midwife suggested tampons and at first I was like "No way am I sticking something up there again!" (sorry - Bit crude) but then after another couple of days of using pads I was definitely ready.
The bleeding was light enough that I could use tampons normally and didn't have a problem with Pelvic Floor muscles after two weeks as they were strong enough by then.

So yeah, it is possible to use tampons after a few weeks.

At least at first (sorry if TMI) its best to use pads because your pelvic floor muscles will be a little weak, and you may have the odd accident on your way to the bathroom. Those pelvic muscles are the ones that hold tampons in place...

Also, the amount of blood is so much that you would need to be changing your tampon every hour or so...

Yeah that's why I said before that I'm not normally a pads girl but realise that it is probably going to be a very different story with post partum bleeding. uummm this might be TMI, but I'm not too sure you'll be wanting to uses tampons after a vaginal birth... owwwies

I bled (again, may be tmi) for 6 weeks or so after. I used libra ulta thin maternity for about 2 weeks, then some night time ones I had bought (may have just been "using them up?", then onto regular thin pads for a few weeks and liners for the last week or 2. Havem't got my period back yet, but will be confidant using tampons now, but I was still experiencing some pain in November, so if I had got it back then it owuld have been NO WAY JOSE!! My plunket nurse told me that it is up to the individual on when they feel ready to use tampons again. This might be a really dingbat question, but with postpartum bleeding I take it tampons are a no no... not to use straight away mind you... but two or three weeks later if you are still going? Have to pack my bags tonight now!! Hehe I bought TWO packets of maternity pads and only used one pack. And I actually used more of them on my c-section wound than for any bleeding too because I had finished bleeding a week after. I brought 8 packets but only went through 3. You can never be to organised. I didnt have any and went into hospital at 34 weeks and was not allowed to leave at all. I bought whatever I had coupons for (Libra goodnights and Stayfree maternity) and after that just used the good old Budget brand $2 super pads. i didn't have any where near enough the first time round - bleeding went for nearly 7 weeks, second time around i wanted to be prepared, and kinda overstocked - but am still thankful cos i can still use them for overnight etc now that i have finally started needing to use them again. I only had one or two maternity pads I got in my mothers pack from the hospital.
