The pink kit is designed to empower women and their a partners.

It's about building your skills, knowledge and confidence and it teaches birth skills for whatever type of birth you have (vaginal, c-section, emergency c, assisted etc) and goes through everything so that even if things don't go to plan you know what's going on and what your body is doing (sometimes the midwives are too busy, or as in rachndeans case too inexperienced, to explain things to you).

I borrowed the pink kit from my midwife when I was pregnant but have to admit I only really briefly glanced at it.  Luckily I had my mum at my birth and she explained things to me when things happened that I didn't expect.  Next time I'll use the pink kit.

My mum had an awful birth experience with me too.  She'd had 2 babies already, both quick and easy and then when my labour wasn't going as expected she started freaking out too and it slowed everything down which made her freak out more and everything got worse. 

She went on to have another baby after me.  My little sis was mums biggest baby and longest labour but she swears it was her easiest.  The difference was that she read up on labour, made birth plan, looked into all eventualities and went into it with more confidence.

You can do this too.  You've already had a "what not to do" birth, now it's time for you to have an amazing birth experience.  Have you thought about buying/borrowing the Pink Kit?
