It's not just plastic toys but colouring in books for 5 year olds with "Baby Bratz" (toddler versions of the doll) in string bikini's and suggestive poses. My sister made me colour one in over last holidays and I thought it was the most rank thing ever. I think has the potential possibility to desensitize children and the adults buying the material to sexual themes.
In saying that though, I don't judge people for buying it for her own kids, do what you will and all but it's just not my cup of tea.

If someone gives Olivia a Bratz themed toy, it's going to be given to St Vincent De Paul, I don't think it's rude to ask people/relatives to go for a cheaper toy (because the brand is disgustingly expensive) or make a deposit in a bank account.

I'm more of a books, clothes, crafts kind of buyer.

But I have had a bit of a giggle reading this. Alex (10) loves Bratz bolls, she's has a few which other people (not me) have brought her over the years but that didn't really start until about age 7. And she hasn't ever wanted to wear "a wide belt" as a skirt She knows that the clothes the dolls wear aren't the sort of clothes I'd let her out in public in. Ah well I can't say I have really strong feelings about them now. But I wouldn't waste my money on them. I just think they are truely ugly.

I'm with ya'll on the Bratz dolls. Even the name - who wants to be a brat even, let alone the skankiness. Ugh.

I was brought up not allowed Barbie dolls because of the impossible perfect body thing, I don't think it really ever occurred to me as a kid anyway, and I certainly played with other girls' dolls. They were just another way of playing going shopping or mothers and fathers. So i don't have a problem with them, and at least they dress nicely!

But I do think that preschoolers (that's as far as I've got but probably a bit older?) should be having baby dolls, not grown-up dolls. It's what they seem to like best, anyhow.

My mum is great, doesn't even need to be asked, always buys him clothes/books/2nd hand things. (some of the 2nd hand things were a bit junky, like his play tent, and toddler bike, but they are also great toys and rather that than new rubbish)

Edited by AliaDawn

Ella was given 3 Bratz... 2 of the 'baby' ones (not as offensive as the usual ones) and a 'normal' one, which is sitting in her cupboard until she's a little older, and I've gone out and bought it big puffy dorky princess dresses, like I feel little girl's dolls need, to replace the skanky outfit it came in.

I don't think its rude at all, so long as you phrased it as a polite request.
I've had invites requesting all kinds of things like 'No toys please" as the parents prefer books or donations to the kids bank accounts or another one requesting "No toy guns or weapons please"
Surely people would prefer you put things like that on the invitation than them unknowingly giving her a present she can't use.

Oh and btw, DH and I totally feel the same way about Bratz stuff, skanky and freakishly large heads! Ella's not having any either.
