It's so close to town and we can easily chose to go to Kilbirnie and the airport via the back way along the Southern Coast - not one single traffic light. Brooklyn has a great community spirit and we have a good set of shops plus a movie theatre and petrol station. I can highly recommend Brooklyn Early Childhood Centre (our community creche), Brooklyn Kindy and Brooklyn School - I have children at each one. The Brooklyn Play Centre is also very popular. With property prices going down, have a look into Brooklyn because you might be happily suprised!

Not as big - depending on where you are in Whitby it can take AGES to get out again and Papakowhai is generally more accessible to the motorway etc. And you have both Paremata and Papakowhai schools in the zone that are supposed to be pretty good. DH rides his motorbike into the city for work and only takes him 10 mins. we are sheltered from most of the weather too and real close to public transport / schools / supermarket etc..

I love the southern and eastern suburbs, Island bay was my aim, but it is so popular that prices are elevated and there is not much space, most are subdivisons, so lacked the garden space we wanted. We found a couple of places in haitiaitai but lack of sun and damp put us off. Kilbirnie/Rongtai/Lyall Bay were good chaeper alternatives too and you could probably get something nice in your budget, (which was our budget when looking 2 months ago)
I love living where we are now, 20 minutes walk to Island bay and 10 minutes to Newtown and work. I don't do suburban so can't comment on other suburbs as they didn't register on my radar
Hope that helps

Edited by Redbedrock

Houses prices in those suburbs are quite steep, with Thorndon around the $700,000 mark and Kelburn around the $500,000 to $600,000 mark. You can buy apartments in Thorndon for around $300,000. But the houses have a lot of character, and I love walking pass the Botanic Gardens everyday. Very short walk to town, and good schools in the area as well (decile 10).

But saying that, Kelburn and Thorndon are lovely suburbs. I would also recommend Hataitai, as houses are cheaper in that area, and it is not too far away from town. Also Island Bay and Miramar are good choices as well.

Karori is also a lovely suburb as well, not all areas are damp.

Redwood is also nice - Oriel Ave and surrounding streets.

My ideal place would be Oriental Parade....
Have to win lotto first, then twist DH's arm....

I do have some ideas of where I want to live but would appreciate your thoughts too.

(We would probably be looking at spending between $450-500K if that helps)
