We've had a few trips away and tthe best breaks are when we've taken advantage of low season rates at motels. We got a cabin once but that was hard work, so was a hotel room (too cramped). With a motel you have a full kitchen so can do your own meals if you've had a big day out plus its nice to have the extra space. We just booked a holiday to fiji for 7 night accom + airfares+breakfast+1 dinner for two all for $729 Per person (mind you we have since checked and its gone up to $859 PP)

We didnt really go any where with Z apart from Wellington each year, I didnt wanna go to Fiji with her sooo young because I was afraid how the heat would affect her (My DH is from there and he always tells me that its too hot there). But now that we are expecting this one and possibly no Holiday for another 3 years we decided to just GO!

You could use cost as argument to travel now though.

Price wise it is a great time to travel with an infant...under 2 year old get charged virtually nothing for anything (free for domestic travel and only 10% fare on international travel)!!! We got charged nothing for Maddie on the cruise for example!!! Once they hit 2 years of age flights are 75% of the adult fare!

we took Rhylz (along with the other 2 older ones) to uk and Usa when he was 4 months old. Great age he just fitted in with everything we did. Then this year in april we went to Sydney (he was 17months) Once again he was fine and just slotted in.

You do need to get away - we haven't planned anything for summer hols but i am keen to get away somewhere - even if its just a weekend away somewhere. Having a baby should not stop you going on holiday , and what they "don't " get out of it, sharing new experiences with them is fun for you :)

We went to Sydney in Feb when Coop was 6 months old. Had lots of fun there and our flights were only around $900 all up including Sydney taxes and insurance. Did lots of sightseeing with Coop in a backpack.

Went again in May when Coop was 9 months, again lots of fun.

In 2 weeks time we're off to Rarotonga for 7 days. I can't wait. Coop will be turning one while we're there. I imagine that we'll just be hanging on the beach most days or by the pool. We're going with friends of ours who have a 6 month old. This trip is a wee bit more than Sydney, but still ok priced I think.

We've done the Gold Coast every year for the past few years with the kids and they always love it, gremlins were about 10 mths when we went last year and like Peachy said they pretty much just cruised along with us, we took Maya to Dreamworld and Seaworld and there were a few rides they could go on which they enjoyed. Sometimes it's just nice to get away from the hum-drum at home. We love annual holidays, at this time of year it gives you something to look forward to! It sounds like you might need to tell him that you'd really like a holiday towards the end of this year, rather than making it all Oli's wish!!

Anyway, cheap ideas for holidays are:

Tenting - why not? He'll be in a nappy anyway and if it's dark he'll probably cuddle up to you. Use the Friends (no-smell) bags for nappies and make sure they live in the boot of your car, nowhere else!! and just have a night or two away somewhere not too far away but far away enough that you won't come back too soon.

Or you could try caravanning - not something I know much about, I've tented but not caravanned.
Are you introverts or extroverts? Our last family holiday was going down to the Hutt and staying with friends for two days (one night). They were happy to put us up and we were happy to shout lunch (we arrived just after dinner and left just before dinner the next day).

We have been to a campgrounds before, it was farm-based as in there were little donkeys and a trampoline and just a friendly atmosphere. Cabins are pretty cheap especially for something like a long weekend.

Have you got friends who want to house-swap for a weekend or week? I've never done it myself but I've heard lots of people love this arrangement for a "free" holiday.

You could even try a bed and breakfast, take your own portacot and land yourself someplace where it would be nice to go for walks etc.

we took Jake to Thailand when he was 8months old. FABULOUS! Thai people LOVE babies and we all had a ball. SimSam have a look at grabaseat and grab some cheap airline tickets! We went to Chch for under $300 for flights for us 3 and we had such a wicked time! Lauren just cruised along with us and fitted in well. I thoroughly recommend going to Hanmer Springs and having in soak in the pools and Oli would love it!

I was also going to suggest the Gold Coast (my fav)!! I took Conor to Christchurch when he was 6mths and again when he was 3. He just fitted in with what we were doing.

So I keep dropping major hints to DH that I would really like a holiday sometime this year, but keep getting a but of a dismissive repsonse....he thinks that there is no point taking Oli on holiday whilst he is so little, as he gets nothing out of it. He is obviously missing the point that mummy needs a holiday....

Any of you had similar experiences? Any suggestions of (cheapish) holiday locations that would be good with a baby under 1?
