I would have thought you will just sense when you need to go.  And I would also be careful about the whole not being able to talk through your contractions bit - I could talk through mine right through labour.  By the time the midwives decided I couldn't I was already ten centimetres and ended up delivering at home (which was great but not at all planned).<br /><br />I would suggest like kaiz231 - when your contractions are regular and about five mins apart.  But like Emma says, you may want to stay at home as long as poss or be more comfortable in hospital - everybody is different.]]>

At 11am, i was in so much agony I told DH to take me in despite him telling me it "wasnt time"., and contractions were all over the place. When I got to the hosp 10mins later  I was 8cm dilated.<br />I think I could have done with some Gas earlier <img border="0" src="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif" border="0"> so if theres ever a next time, Ill be going to the hospital as soon as I feel like it!]]>

We live in the country and it would take us 50mins to an hour to get to the hospital.  <br />If you're in a similar situation I'd recommend doing what we did with my first and heading to town at the first sign of contractions and going to family or friends first so you're closer so you dont have to judge it the same.  ]]>

My mw said to go to hosp when the contractions were a minute long - this was about 9pm. I was 7-8cm dilated when I arrived at hosp.<br /><br />I was comfortable with this because we live quite close to the hospital - it would be worth considering how long it will take you to get to hosp - including in peak hour traffic etc.]]>

She said she will be able to tell when on the phone with me whether it time to head into hospital or not. I had two contractions whilst on the phone to her & couldn't talk thru them, this is a good sign you are ready to go in. If you can talk thru them, then they not quite strong enough & unless you don't feel comfy at home, they often recommend you stay home as long as you can becuase the move to the hospital can sometimes cause the contractions to slow down a bit due to unfamiliar teritory]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=4840">CaseysMum</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 19847<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 05 August 2008 at 10:04pm<br /><br />I think all you need to really comment on is whether you want to stick around at home till the last minute or go in earlier - remember once you get to a certain dilation you can't have an epidural and stuff so if you want that you may need to plan to go to the hospital earlier<br /><br />Both times my birth plan went out the window anyway - ended up in the main hospital with my first in an ambulance ride (things happening too quickly and I couldnt travel by car) when I had planned a birthing centre, second time around planned to go the main hospital and had her at home as she came even quicker than my first.  Both times once I was lieing down I didn't move so all my plan about walking around and using the birthing ball, birth pool etc just went out the window.]]>

Though sayng that I had a very basic birth plan (she doesn't believe in indepth ones as things can change so much), just where I wanted to birth, skin to skin, Vit K yay or nay, DH to catch and cut cord, that sort of thing. ]]>

We had been in contact with the MW in the morning and already had an appt that day (Jack was early). I remember DH ringing the MW and even though I was on the other side of the house she could hear me and headed to ours. Once she examined me that is when I decided I wanted to go to the hosp. as I needed something for the pain, I think I was about 6/7cm. For us that worked well as it was about an hour or so after we arrived that I started pushing. We had enough time to get settled without hanging around too long.]]>
