Right Teresa... some tips and what went wrong:

Kid was dressed in waterproof overall type things (well, pants with straps ya know?), merino leggings, knitted pants, l/s merino underlayer, icebreaker hoodie, ski jacket, hat and mittens. Which was great. Fantastic even. Until she got snow up her sleeves. Then the sh*t hit the fan.

Soooo... I advise something like fingerless gloves that would fit under their gloves and go some way up their arms. You could easily make a pair out of socks but cutting off the toe and cutting a little hole for thumb. That'd totally prevent snow-up-mitten syndrome.

And definitely have sun glasses or goggles or something. It was really sunny and glarey up at the mountain and can damage eyes really easily.

And just an idea of timing etc... Han lasted a couple of hours and had a few tanties (wanted Jutey?) but I was very ready to head home at 1pm (arrived 11am). I'd have an easy escape plan.

I hired a little sled thing from an Ohakune hire place and it was fabulous. Just sucked when the kid decided it was a good idea that I drag her back up the hill on it. Gah.

Take spare gloves and spare socks for each kid. It turns to custard when they get cold, and they will get cold hands and feet. Don't have too high expectations, and just go with the flow. Take your togs to have a nice swim in the hot pools on the way home.
I really recommend hiring the snow boots rather than wearing gumboots. Gumboots get really cold really quickly.

We just came back and you can hire the kids suits for about $20 from shops in Ohakune and the top of the mountain (I presume you are heading for Ruapehu). Plenty of warm things and changes of clothing, the problem we had was gloves as Fay just takes them off but was crying that her hands were cold the whole time.
The weather wasn't great, the wind nearly blew her away at one point so she and I didn't spend too much time outside, we hid in the cagfe watching Curious George on the TV. But Fay fell over on the steps and almost put her teeth through her bottom lip so we had many hysterics to calm down.

We're taken the kids up a couple of times. Got some thermals - bought then a few sizes to big so they will last longer. Also waterproof pants are a good idea as it will keep them dryer longer and therefore enjoy it more. Have a look at the Warehouse, they have a lot of winter things on sale and I have seen some purple ski pants - buy one get one free.
