LOL the grass didn't taste any different to your usual coconut - except toasted! I agree it's a bit of a weird thought though. My dad's 40th cake had "grass" on it (it was a soccer pitch) and from what I remember (it was 10 years ago now) it tasted fine.

Ive totally gone off this icing idea - it seems SO easy but hearing heaps of people talk about it and how hard it is has scared me! lol.

Icing scares me

I can never get it to do what I want with the piping bag. It takes a bit of practice

For Ash's first birthday, I did this cake:

The 'grass' is dessicated coconut plus a few drops of green food colouring mixed in a small plastic bag, then toasted in the oven for a few minutes to dry it off. You can get a piping bag at a $2 shop or The Warehouse or K Mart.

Hmm ok so it sounds like its going to be a bit of a mission for a beginner oops.

They said I need "American vegetable shortening, it is $9.90 per 1 pound tin, so isn't much dearer than Kremelta, but will save you a lot of time"

I need a coupler and a piping bag - how much are these does anyone know?

Sorry, I don't know what else you'd need for this... could you just use a plastic bag with a hole cut out of the corner to fit the nozzle in?
I usually make 'grass' decorations by mixing green (ie, yellow and blue) food colouring through dessicated or shredded coconut. Its not quite as ornate as what you are trying to do, but its a lot easier

hhhm does it say what you can use it with - ie. does it say to use butter icing or sugarpaste etc?

I'd say that you prob wouldn't need anything else to get the grass effect looks like the nozzle is right for doing it.

I once made grass tufts for a cake by getting the ready to roll stuff, colouring it green and treating it like i would playdough - ie breaking off tiny bits, making strands and then sticking them together witha tiny bit of water.

Find out what type of icing you need to use with that, then cover the cupcakes with a fine covering of green butter icing, and do the grass to stick on and voila!

If it's butter icing i would say to make it kinda thicker at stiffer so it holds the shape well - which really is probably what it needs to be actually looking at the pic of the cupcakes again i think it might be - in that case, I'd say you just put the icing in the bag and use it like you would a star nozzle doing little bits and repeating over and over again and it should stick if there's already a fine layer of butter icing on the cupcake. Have a play around with it..

I have just brought this nifty wee thing to make "grass" for the top of the cupcakes - BUT now I have realised I think I need more than what Ive brought!

What else do I need to buy that goes with this and how much approx do you think the other stuff I need is?
