We bought our van (Nissan Serena) for $5K off a dealer and it has needed very little maintenance. Hopefully you can find a good vehicle for not too much $$

On the positive side, I'm glad you're about to become a home carer. Kazzle I think something is up there as when my parents sold a car (or was it a house) and still paid insurance on it. All they had to do was show when they sold it and they got refunded the difference (and that was ami)

I guess with you insuring for market value you kinda knew the risks.

OK that is weird, as I am with State and when we got rid of a car we had paid ours in advance they refunded us the left over amount (well I made them but it on the other insurance policies).

Minik8e: We are with AMI with agreed value. AMI actually depreciate the value of the car each year, so altho we started at agreed of "x" amount, it is now slightly lower than that due to depreciation. Maybe but Ann....if all insurance companies paid out "Agreed Value" as AMI do, the amount of money it would cost would be staggering, as people could insure their vehicles for whatever they want, and the companies would have to pay, even if the car is only worth 1/4 of it. It could lead to some people totalling their cars just for the higher payout (i.e. an upgrade at all insurance customer's costs, as EVERYONE's premium would go up to cover the cost of the inflated claims).

I feel your pain Kazzle.

I find it hard that insurance companies will charge you a premium of a say $10000 car then when it comes to pay out will only pay out market value (which is normally a much lesser value) It happened to my sil too when theirs got stolen (about a month or so ago and they still haven't been paid by the insurance company)

we are with ami and they pay out whet we are paying for regardless of the market value of the car.

the thing is, that we were looking at upgrading out car in 12mths, as we can only get 2 carseats in it, and as im about to become a homecarer and we want more kids, we need a bigger car.

Normally your insurance (or his if he has any, which i'm assuming he doesn't) will pay for other costs like incurred travel costs etc and normally some money just for the pure inconvenience of it all.

That sucks!

To save a bit of $ though you could always down grade your car. as if we werent struggling enough having just brought our new home.......our car is a write off, and the market value is only $2,800

so this asshole who didnt know how to drive is going to cost us over $8,000 and its going to be a couple of weeks before we can get a new/used car, so there is the travel costs as well
