I am 27 and my midwife had no prpoblem referring me for the 13 weeks scan, she just sked me if i wanted it and i said yep - and it was great to get a peek at bubs! Kelpa scans can show clefts but really only later unless they are pretty big or they are specifically looking for one. Kobes wasnt picked up until a scan at 34 weeks and it was only a fluke because his was so small but my friends wee one had a bad cleft lip and palate and that was picked up early. Another friends baby had hydrocefalis (sp?) and it was really bad which was the only reason it was picked up at the 18 weeks scan, otherwise they would never have known because most people dont need scans after then. I think they can see most problems like that, thats what they are looking for but as always there are no guarantees. Hmmm I had 5 scans with my first pregnancy...All to do with really heavy bleeding. This time I was told to the NT scan as I am 30 and the risks get higher or something. I think you have to generally have it 30 and over????

I noticed earlier someone was writing about Cleft Palates? Can scans actually show these? I've gone from the date of my last period too... not too reliable considering I came off the pill a day after it ended, and concieved that month! What scans you're offered seems to depend a lot on which DHB you fall under, and whether or not you've got a specialist, midwife, or someone in-between. Hey Becca I think some midwives are reluctant to send you for the 12 weeks scan if you are younger cause the risk of downs is so much lower, and I think they have to give a good reason for you to have scan's cause my MW never offered it to me at all and my one for ALan when I asked her she said she could not send me for one with out good reason or something. Hey Becca, I have a Protein S deficiency. Actually just had my appointment with a high rish ob yesterday. It is linked to low birth weights hence the need to check babies growth. Funnily enough my mother has it (and has also had clots) and my 2 sisters and myself were all under 6 pound full term at birth! My mw gave me the option of having a scan at 12 weeks. When I said I definately did (anything to get to have a look at bubs!!!) she said because of my age (26) there was very very little chance of downs so I didn't really need to have the nucheal fold test. But she was quite happy for me to have a scan just for a looksie. BTW I had the test done anyway seeing as I was there! I also had 2 scans around 6/7 weeks because of bleeding, having the anatomy scan in 3 weeks and then 2 growth scans at 28 and 34 weeks because of a blood clotting disorder I have. I had nuchal scan at 12 weeks just to see how high the risk is for Downs Syndrome. Very low chance but i thought I may as well so I can see baby as well and that all is going well.

I had the NT one at 13weeks. I don't see her again until 16 weeks, then I'll have my anatomy scan a few weeks later (she's made a special request on my behalf for it to be a particular time and day so that Nat can come too)... so there isn't really much point!

What I find interesting, is that I wasn't offered the choice with Josiah or this time. With Kobe I had the 12 week, 18 week and then had another few when I went into hospital with him but they were for size initially and then more for the cleft. I had one with Maya and planned to again with this baby - my midwife offered me the choice as my risk is low too due to age. In Japan, I had one every month with jake, with Taine I had one when I found out I was pregnant (16 weeks), and then didn't go back to the doctor! I haven't had a dating scan either... which suprised me, as I found out I was pregnant so far along! My midwife is happy to go off my period date - good thing I'd been keeping good records this year!

I didn't have a dating scan with Josiah, but I knew very well how far along I was, as we concieved him a couple of weeks after I came off the pill. I got a dating scan at 7 weeks, and didn't have another until 19 weeks for the anatomy scan. I had one at 12 weeks - Nuchal Translucency scan. That's the test for Downs Syndrome and other genetic abnormalities. I dont know whether I will get offered one at 12 weeks. At present, I'm booked for an 7-8 weeks one on Monday next week. I was well past that when I found out I was pregnant with Kiya, so it wasn't an option...

I had one at 12 weeks with Josiah, but it was for bleeding rather than to check on the baby... if I wasn't bleeding I wouldn't have had the option...
