We had some idea that Kaelen was gonna be a decent size. lol. From about 7 months pregnant i started measuring ahead. At 40 weeks i was measuring 44. My stomach got pretty big. He felt big & solid when he would move around. He was such a wriggler & caused me so much pain. My ribs were always SO sore & man did it hurt when he'd move his head around. OUCH. My midwife guessed he would be between 8-9lb. wow at the 10pd 8!!

My first son was a decent size at 9pd 10oz

No2 was average, 8pd 4oz

No 3 was a surprise, I didnt look that large but he was a bonny 10pd 1oz  It was the easiest birth of all of them too!!

My boy was 10lb 8oz, born through emergency c-section after 20 odd hours of labour, only ever made it 7cm dilated because his head was huge and he couldn't push down enough.

I had the twins comment as well from quite early on, and we were told that Daniel would prob be a big baby. Well, 9 days overdue and I was induced and he came out as a 7pd 8oz baby! I guess you just never know how they'll turn out. He's now 8 and a half months is about 9.5 kg. Caitlin was 9lb 7oz (4285g) and 52cn. She stayed a "big baby" until she started to walk and then she really slimmed down (I really miss her rolls! ). 24mths Plunket check she was 11.5kg and 84cm and I've even been asked (not by Plunket) how premmie she was

Caitlin also got "stuck" she was posterior, head was semi-flexed and she had the cord wrapped around her neck twice. I can add my DH to the list he was number 4 and a healthy 11lb 4 - bag on 5kgs born. All of my MIL's babies were over 10lb as well. All are now over 6f tall (DH is the tallest at 6f 4, and my SIL is 6f) and apart from SIL they all sit around 90-100 odd kgs.

My son was 4.39kg or 9lb 11oz. It was a pretty bad birth. I tore twice. The worst one was internal. He had his hand by his face. I lost 2 litres of blood too. There were other things too which weren't very nice, but i won't get into that. DS is 7.99kgs at 4 months, and 71cm long. I had a healthy pregnancy and was teeny tiny. Had a natural birth with both my children, DSs birth was virtually drug free (apart from a bit of gas during transition)

I had a very healthy diet during pregnancy, couldnt stand carbs. She was still 9lb6.

She was 3 days overdue but the mw thought after looking at her placenta and stuff that the dates may have been out and she was atcually a few weeks early. Glad then I didnt go any longer!

Keira wasnt a tiny baby either, 8lb 9 and now at 3 she only just weighs 14kg. Im expecting maddi not to turn out that big when shes older. Although I didnt expect her to put on 500+g a week after she was born either

I don't know if it's true but I know it made me feel very guilty when I was told this... like somehow I had a really bad diet and that was why I had a big baby, like it was a 'bad' thing to have a big baby. Of course this wasn't what was said, but it's how I felt. And Harry wasn't even that big so I don't know why I was so sensitive! Oh wait, that's right.... preggie hormones + exhausted = very sensitive. Lol. My diet wasn't too bad, I had a lot of fruit and veges. Also a lot of dairy (it's what I craved) and probably an average amount of carbs. I say eat what you feel like. Don't over-do it but don't freak out and put yourself on a diet either... Yep so true - as I said in my first post, I don't think I tore because I had a big baby... Anyway, just to reassure the preggos having big babies - I don't think size has a whole lot to do with tearing at all. As some here have said, they tore with tiny babies! It's more about how fast the babe comes out, what sort of position they are in, and skin elasticity than anything else.

I didn't tear at all. Had a small graze but I think that's pretty normal.

ETA: At four years on Han is a scrawny thing but quite tall for her age... she was a super chubbo babe but thinned out around 2 years.

Brae was 9lb 6oz born. Two days before he was esstimated by scan to be 7-7 1/2 lbs LOL.
Kalyx was only 8lb 1oz & I can see already he is going to be the bigger child. AT 10mnths they were B 9.5kg 75cm & K 9.98kg & 80cms

Both were c-secs

Mine were all natural births with no tearing - except an epesiotomy with my first because my bp went through the roof and I was about to have a stroke and baby would have passed away.

#3 9lb 4oz (week early)

With #1 I ripped from hole to hole (to put it nicely LOL) He is now 15. He is 6ft 3' and around 83kgs.

#2 didn't stay big and is a skinny adverage size 10 year old

#3 Well hes 2 and I would say hes a bit of a light wieght - hes 12kgs at 21 months although he is tall - 87cms a month ago.

ETA: when brooke was born a friend had a 5lber and brooke (shes #2) and she looked huge compared to that baby - got a photo at around 7 months old and theres not much between them, met up about 1 1/2 years old and that other lil girl was bigger than Brooke - so size doesn't always mean big born - big child

Geez arohanui, wonder what 'shattered' means?  No wonder labour and birth quickly become distant, hazy memories .... otherwise why would we go back for more . My tear was in a similar place to you, but I didn't need a follow up appointment. This is still freaking me out a bit tho, cause DS was 2.5 weeks early (so if I go full term next time I'll probably have a bigger baby) and elective c-sections aren't offered on the Coast .

My little man was 9lb 13oz and I had an emergency c section due to being 17 days overdue, meconium in waters, pre eclampsia developed in labour and baby was a bad fit for my pelvis and I wasnt progressing well. When he came out the 'escape hatch' I was kinda glad in some ways and sad in others, strange situation.

He lost nearly 10% of his birth weight due to my lack of milk but by 2 weeks was back to just over 4.45kgs and at 4 weeks he was just over 5kgs. Will be interesting to see what his official 6 week stats are when I see the Dr next week.

Crikey, you've got me worried Arohanui. I had a 3rd degree tear too (from pushing bubs out really fast as his heart rate dropped far too much - he was only 6lb13oz) but also had good surgery and healed well. My midwife told me I probably wouldn't tear again next time, ie another natural birth should be no problem. Wonder if she's wrong??



Maybe it's about where the tear was? TMI but I think mine went back? In my notes it says something about something being 'shattered' as well I had to go for a follow up appointment at the hospital, the gynae lady who checked me out said that next time there's about a 1 in 4 chance of being left incontinent (from the back passage ) which can eventually be fixed by surgery but not til like 6 months after the birth. SO don't wanna risk that happening.

Maya was 9lb1oz at 38 weeks. Gremlins were little (6lb8oz and 7lb1oz) but when you consider they were 36 week twins, had they gone to term they would have been 8lb each

I was expecting Chiara to be huge and had a growth scan at 36 weeks which showed she was average but I still thought she'd be around 8 1/2lb so was shocked when she came out a 'tiny' 7lb12oz. I know that's average, but for me it's tiny! Her cord was tightly round her neck and very short so that might be why she was smaller.

Maya was the same as your Anyssa DJ, she hit 8kg on her first birthday so took more than 12 months to double her birthweight. Gremlins had doubled theirs by 12 weeks but still didn't hit 8kg till 12 mths.

Oh and with Maya I had a normal birth, long labour but that was coz she was posterior not her size. Blair was 9lb 2oz (4130g) The day before EDD (6 days before actual delivery) MW asked about big babies in the family - ironic cos I got sent for a scan at 32.5 weeks to check on IUGR

Blair was average length at 51.cm His last plunket check at 8.5 months he was 10.7kg and 76.5cm. (We weighed him at the vet recently and tried to measure him and got 11.5kg and 80cm)

Andrew was average at 8lb 4. But Josh was 9lb 4 and a week early . I found his birth so much easier than Andrew's.

Anyssa was 8lbs140z at birth, but still hadn't doubled her birth weight at 9mths - she's tall and slim at just under 8kgs and 73.5cms.

I'm amazed to hear of 12-13 wk old bubbas who weigh more than her!

ETA - oh yeah, the tear - don't know what degree, but lets just say I had to go to theatre to be stitched up by a dr, and I was too scared to poo for quite a while....

Crikey, you've got me worried Arohanui. I had a 3rd degree tear too (from pushing bubs out really fast as his heart rate dropped far too much - he was only 6lb13oz) but also had good surgery and healed well. My midwife told me I probably wouldn't tear again next time, ie another natural birth should be no problem. Wonder if she's wrong??

I was half expecting to have a 10lber at 38 weeks i had a scan and they estimated the baby to be 8lb5oz so we a nice surprise when she was only 8lb15oz.

I am so glad mine got smaller, I would have suvived if they actually got bigger lol

My 10lb was a emergency c sect as she was stuck with her shoulders and was no way coming that way.  She was my chubby bubba and was still chubby through kindy and up to school when she stopped growing out and kept growing up. SHe is now the same waist size to her 7 year old sister. SHe is very long and lean and just to think when she was 18mths old I was sent off to the GP by my plunket nurse as she said she was Obese because she was off the chart. Was at the GP in tears when he says "bollocks" she is a gorgeous beautiful baby girl. I never again listened to my plunket nurse re her weight!!

Now I have a 7 year old who is the taller than most 10 year olds *rolls eyes* lol SHe said she cant wait to be short!

Keiran was 9lb14oz (4.5kg) at birth and 52cm long. I had a third degree tear.

I had no idea I was having a big baby. I never thought she would be tiny after having Keira 8lb 9. I measured 2 weeks behind almost the whole way through.
We birthed at the local maternity hospital (lucky co I only just made it there)
I had a natural birth with no problems, and atcually thought she looked smaller than Keira.

Lauren was born 9lbs and 55cm long at 38 weeks. They estimated that if she had stayed in till 40 weeks plus she would have been 11lbs

I did know all along that I was going to have a big baby as at every scan they wrote "macrosomia" which is large baby syndrome. I had fortnightly/montly scans towards the end.

Yep I measured big for dates right through. I really wanted a natural birth at Birthcare, but the midwife was concerned as he was measuring so big. I was supposed to be going for another growth scan on my due date (Thursday) and if the mw thought he was too big she was going to suggest I went to the hospital instead. But Harry came on the Tuesday and we had him at Birthcare!

I had a natural birth with no drugs or gas or anything, but had bad tearing - not just cos he was big though, but also cos his head was 39.5cm cos it was swollen (he tried to come out from the top/back of his head so it was swollen there). And to top it off, the thing that I thing did the worst damage, was he had his hand on his face... the mw reckoned the elbow kinda pushed out as he came out. Ouch. So yeah 3rd degree tear, no lasting damage cos I got transferred to the hospital and got really good surgery, but next time it's recommended I have an elective otherwise I run the risk of there being lasting damage.

Unfortunatly after 24 hours in hosp in labour i was a failure to progress so i had an emergency c sect. i realy wanted to give birth but when he came out i was kinda glad lol. Next time though hopfully.

oh and i knew he was going to be big, gave the midwives a suprise though and it was so funny him in scbu (they needed to check blood sugar levals)next to the tiny babies (though i only saw pics and herd about it)!

Wow 10lb 8! My boy was 9lb 3oz, so not super huge but still a reasonable weight. At 7 months he was 9kg, in 75th percentile for weight but 97th for height. People always think he's older than he is cos he's so tall.

But the main reason I wanted to post in this thread......... my DH was a HUGE baby.....

11lb 10oz.

I'm tiny (only just 5ft) so that was pretty big for me. She has slowed down a wee bit now, thank goodness, dont know how I could carry a heavy bubs around. At 5 months she was over 8kg, she will be properly weighed next week so that should be interesting.
