Hehe Nikki, rest assured I do know how to put petrol in a car It was one of the first lessons I had when DH started teaching me to drive. (The driving part is still a work in progress though!)
Rach, I'm not 100 % sure either but I *think* it is a kit with wires and stuff that you set up as a circuit with the battery to make a light bulb switch on or something? I have vague memories of form 2 science class on electricity....

In the end I got fed up with all the head shaking and showed him the little side-table I made again, to remind him that I'm not completely deficient in the useful skills department. I love that little table. It sits tucked away between the couch and the bookshelf and it's main purpose is redeeming me when incidents like the one above occur. While I was vacuuming the other day I decided I should test the smoke detector as it had been a while since it had had a new battery.
Pressed the test button, no ear-drum shattering beeps.
At the supermarket today I dutifully added the requisite 9v battery to the purchases and when I got home I asked hubby to change it for me.
"You can do it Mel" he said encouragingly.
"Are you sure?" I said "I don't want to bugger it up"
"How can you possibly bugger it up? Its just opening it up and putting the battery in" He assured me.
He did look a little doubtful when I had great difficulty extracting the battery from its packet, despite the helpful pop-out serration on the backing card, but urged me on with a big thumbs up when I finally got it out.
I got the old battery out with no trouble and inserted the new one in it's place. Closed it up and press the test button.... nothing!
Open it up again, new battery seems to be disconnected. Pop it back up, close the lid, press test button... again, nothing!
Open it up, battery is disconnected again.
"Honey, I think there is something broken on here, the battery won't stay in!"
Hubby comes to see and within seconds has the thing bleeping away like mad.
"What did you do?!" I say, amazed at his skill.
He explains very slowly that these kinds of batteries need to be clicked into the connector thingees.
"Honestly Mel! Didn't you ever have circuit toys as a kid where you had to connect them up to 9 volt battery?"
"Er, no" I replied " I played with dolls and teasets and that sort of thing"
I'm getting disdainful head shakes from him every now and then. I feel like such a disgusting role model for girlpower right now
Off to buy Ella a circuit toy first thing tomorrow
