i gave birth a few days after starting this thread and it took my mind off the cols sore totally!

I know this is a semi old thread- but- I had chronic coldsores for 10 months a few years back, and have LOTS of my own experience with different remedies. Obviously only what works for me... but here goes:

Use Lucas PawPaw as a lipbalm in general, it prevents them occuring.
If you sense one coming- Use Dr Harker's Healing Balm/salve it comes in a small pottle and looks like lipbalm. It's natural- and really good. Itll last forever too. A small amout every few hours. I used to pop it around the coldsore a bit too to stop the spread....

I found Blistex actually caused coldsores to appear. Like it stimulated the nerve or something. Plus it felt horrible on your lips, like they were burning up.

Vit C in high doses works well in the early stages too. 2000mg kinda thing... but not sure about that during pregnancy.??

in the latest next magazine there is a new product out called compeel or something like that ... it's a tiny clear plaster thing you place over the coldsore which hides it and heals it at the same time.

Might be worth a try.

I've never had as many coldsores as I have had during this pregnancy (currently 20 weeks), must have had about four. As soon as I feel the tingle, I slather on blistex which seems to work.

I never thought of not using zovirax I was about 11wks.

I also second the L-lysine tablets if you are able to take them.

Another thing I have used when I didn't have anything else and it was fresh was marmite and resist licking it off lol, leave it on like an ointment even overnight if possible. I think its the vitamin b in it. Took the inflamation out of the blister overnight and really came to nothing much at all. Try and avoid chocolate as there is something in choco. that promotes cold sores (sorry this information is from a long time ago and the memory is not quite as good as it was)

I second the L-lysine. I don't know about it's safety during pg though so check first. It's great for stopping other ones popping up too.

Ive had about six of them in the 14weeks Ive been pregnant!! I went to the health food shop and she suggested pawpaw cream and colodal (sp??) silver. Eek had no idea you couldn't use coldsore cream while pregnant! I had a coldsore last week (completely rundown!) and I used an ointment id used previously and it cleared in a day... thanks for the replies - that is a few suggestions to look in to
I will go to the local pharmacy on Monday when it is open cos they are much more helpful there than the stupid out-of-hours one i had to go to this afternoon

I will also try manuka honey neat - (i am ready to go for anything!)

Hi, there is a Comvita Lipclearcold sore product that is based on Manuka honey. It also has l-lysine and propolis in it, it doesn't say anything on the pack about not using it in pregnancy.

There is also Betadine cold sore paint and ointment available too. The base for those is povadone iodine.

I didn't click I couldn't use Zovirax until I was about 14 weeks. I used it probably 3-4 times. Freaked out but the scan was all clear and am not using it now so all good.

I find the best way to avoid getting them is to stay out of the sun. I get more from UV exposure than from being run down. Chap sticks and Vaseline are good too. I haven't had a sore since I started slapping on the vaseline every night before bed. I recently had a cold sore too. I get them when I am really run-down, and I think the not sleeping combined with the flu caused mine. The pharmacist just told me that I could use Savex or Blistex.

I have always been a Savex user for dry lips, I find it much better than Blistex. It doesn't really do much for the cold sore to be honest, but does at least keep it hydrated so you don't have horrid cracking and blistering.

And, I guess, if it is that painful, you can take panadol although I have been wary of even having too much of that while pregnant.

You have to watch the Aciclovr (sp?) in cold sore meds as it's linked to birth defects. I was on an oral daily dose before as my cold sores were out of control and would spread internally. Not very nice. Haven't had any since being pg which is weird.......

A friend told me if you lance it then apply pure aloe vera direct from the plant then it will disappear. Never tried it so can't say for sure. Otherwise theres nothing you can do except keep clean and don't touch it. I have woken up with a giant cold sore on my top lip.

Usually I use zovirax, but i have just been to the pharmacy and they said this shouldn't be used in pregnancy, and i can't use anything.

Not one to suffer in silence, I was wondering if anyone had any suitable remedies/relief i could try as it bloody hurts and i am feeling fed up!

Also, should I be concerned that i am due to give birth any day (obviously kissing my new baby is now out of the question). I am seeing MW on Monday so I can ask her then, but I am a bit worried about passing infection on to bubs.
