The only false alarms we've had are when I get her up and forget to turn the monitor off. We have the angelcare sound and movement one, and it definitely gave me peace of mind since Alyssa was in her own room from the start. By the way, you can adjust the sensitivity of the monitor to ensure there are no false alarms. We have the angel care. It was my last baby purchase before Oliver was born because I didn;t know that it was worth spending that much money. For me I wanted a monitor more for knowing the baby was safe and breathing ok rather than for sound and so we ended up getting one. It has been my BEST baby purchase. It doesn't make me paranoid - if anything I feel so much better knowing he has it especially when he is sick. I think they are well worth the money (even though I wasn't sure at the time) Ours has never accidentally gone off. we have the philips one. i had wanted the angelcare one but couldn't afford it. Also someone said to me they found it great but a bit of a pain if you forgot to turn it off as the alarm would sound because there was no baby there..... We have a Phillips.
It's great. It has lights on it, so I could have the volume off at night and just have the lights flashing when she's crying. Of course, it helps that I'm a light sleeper and the dog whines at our door if I don't wake up

I hadn't thought about our cats, so doors will have to be shut. I am looking on trade me and you are right plenty of the angel care ones out there in original packaging for less.

I will see if I can get a bargain I think.

I saw the $350 in baby city yesterday and wondered what else it did, for that price I would expect it to change or feed the baby as well.

i never had one wth the other kids but because the babys room if further away from mine this time i do use one for nights.

Haha, I have a spreadsheet too, and write what I want, make model and which shop is cheaper

We have the angelcare sound and movement, I have found it reassuring rather than making paranoia worse. We have to keep his door shut cos of having 4 cats so is hard to check on him so this gave me piece of mind. I still use it during the day as it can be hard to hear him if I am in the kitchen/laundry.

We have had the alarm go off twice but both times were due to the pads having moved (I changed his bed and must of disturbed them) and he had then wriggled in the opposite direction and it just couldnt' pick him up. This only happened when he was quite small though, and although it was a frightening dash to his room it was quite reassuring to know that at least it works.

We managed to buy one second hand for $120 off trademe so you don't need to spend mega bucks on one. Okay so I have been researching these so here is my 2 cents worth.

We are looking at the ones that check movement ie that baby is breathing. DH is adamant that this is what we are getting for some reason.

Angelcare "the original" $250 at Baby Factory and $279 at Baby City.

The Angelcare digital version which also measures the temperature in the room $359 at both.

People seem to love or hate these. Someone said all the false alarms were disruptive someone else swore by it and never had a false alarm for two babies.

Now am I going to get in trouble for talking about shops and prices?

I am starting a spreadsheet with various stuff, models and prices and may start to leave it lying around the house when mother and mother in law visits :-) Well they keep asking about shopping.

Oh and the spreadsheet... yeap my husband thinks I am a big computer geek but I love planning stuff so don't judge me too harshly

We have a Philips one - they are a well known name and are among the cheapest out there. I don't feel that I need a sound and movement one (at first I hadn't even heard of them anyway) because you get into baby's routine pretty easily and in the early days I check them pretty regularly out of paranoia anyway LOL.

I like the monitor we have. It's enough to hear baby when she's otherwise just a bit out of earshot. It depends on your house, too. But we didn't want a sound and movement monitor because of the price but also because I thought it would make me paranoid too.

Hi,

First time mum question here. we are at the stage of buying final bits and pieces and I have been looking at baby monitors and kind of suprised by the range and the price!!!!

For those who have babies what kind of monitor did you get, i don't know if the monitor that tells you if the baby has stopped breathing is a great idea or something that would make me totally paranoid.

I guess its a preference thing, but any advice anyone has on this would be great!!
