All I've read so far is why people don't like it for themselves and why they don't like the whole 'body beautiful' pressure in society. Just because I give my opinion on why it's not right for me doesn't mean I'm judging anyone else who has it done.

You're right, the body beautiful image IS all around us. That's the point some people are making - it was nice not to have it in our faces here.

I agree that it's my job to build up my daughters' self esteem and make them strong, but I'm not the only influencer in that respect. They will read those magazines and look at websites and watch TV and talk to their friends - there are so many places they will get bombarded with that 'perfect' message.

By voicing my opinion and standing up to the 'body beautiful' messages, I am hoping to somehow have an impact on the society my daughters and I live in. When they see me stand up to that impossible ideal (and it is impossible, airbrushing and all), they are learning to have confidence in themselves (without surgery ) and build their self esteem. Magazines and websites aren't to blame for poor self image, but they sure don't help improve things.

JMTCW

Edited to fix spelling and grammar

Edited by Mazzy

    Author: Jennz
Subject: 21274
Posted: 30 September 2008 at 12:35am

This reminds me of a plastic surgery advertisement they had in the toilets at the movie theater in Newmarket. up on the wall of each cubicle they had an advertisement so when you sat down to wee that was right at your eye level. I remember thinking it was such clever placement as most woman have just been in and seen a movie where the woman are made up to perfection and shot in a way to make them look as glamorous as possible and then afterwards you go to have a wee and 'bam!' - they get ya while you're self esteem is low.
Clever- but kind of predatory.
Thats a bit how I feel about having an ad on the Oh Baby page. Yes its clever, yes Oh Baby is a business and advertising is what makes them money, yes if people find issue with it it has more to do with their own issues than the 'advertiser'- but it just seems a bit.... off really, to 'prey' on new Mums.

On one of the posters someone had written in vivid "you are beautiful just as you are"- gave me warm fuzzies seeing that Now thats what I think of whenever I see plastic surgery advertisements now

Edited by Jennz

She is extremly down about her boobs.

So I guess, if they do an ad for losing weight by exercise and stuf, then why ot have one for plastic surgery, if you can afford to do it then why not!

Edited by CadensMum

I think that women who have had children should be idealised for their post-pregnancy bodies. I hate that our society is so stuck on this image of flat, tight bodies. They are not realistic and don't help to make anyone feel good about themselves. I'm not saying that all plastic surgery is bad, my friend had twins a few years ago and she is the most flexible person I know (and I grew up in the circus so I know flexible) and as a result her stomach skin stretched so much that after the birth she could literally pull her stomach skin up over her breasts practically to her chin! She had plastic surgery to correct that. I just hate that it's being pushed at women who look fine. Those women in the pictures in the add don't look bad to me.
